Identifying Characteristics of Potential and Actual Acid Sulphate Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four pedons were collected from Chakaria of Cox's Bazar district. Some of their morphological characteristics and pH of the soil with water and hydrogen peroxide were studied. Colour was found neutral at the subsoil. The soils of Chakaria series exhibited jarosite mottles colour on the previously exposed soil materials. but not freshly opened soil profile during field study. On the other hand, Cheringasoils have jarosite mottling colour in the freshly dug soil profiles. The Chakaria soil is unripened with no structure development and have A and C horizons only, whereas the Cheringa soils have A, B and C horizons with prismatic to angular blocky structure in the B horizon. The soil pH with H₂O₂ was found to be lower than that with water in al the horizons of the four profiles. In Chakaria profiles, the decrease of pH with H₂O₂ treatment exceeded one pH unit in comparison with that. of water suspensions; but in Cheringa, it is less than one pH unit. The difference in pH indicated that the Chakaria soils accumulated relatively higher amounts of Pyrite, which have produced more H₂SO₄ through oxidation by H₂O₂ treatment than that of Cheringa soils. On the basis of morphology and difference in pH, the ChakcIria soils may be grouped in to potential and the Cheringa soils into actual acid sulphate soils.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to determine the characteristics of potential and actual Acid sulphate soils at Cox's Bazar district.

Methodology:

The tidal floodplain of Cox's Bazar district was selected for study as a representative area of acid sulphate soils. This area comprised south eastern parts of Cox's Bazar district, which lies between approximately 20°45' and 21°57' and 91°40' and longitudes. During the field study, the soils were augered to a depth of 150 cm depending on the ground water level. Pedons were described from pits supplemented by spot identification from augerhole. Four pedons of acid sulphate soil of various stages of development were selected and pits were dug in selected locations. Soil morphological properties were in the field with moist/wet soils using Hellige-Truog test kit and with air dried soils in laboratory in soil-water (1: 1) suspension using a Corning pH meter (Model 7) as outlined by Jackson (1973). The pH was also determined after H₂O₂ treatment as described by Van Beers (1962) with a slight modification of H₂O₂ concentration (6% H₂O₂ at 1 : 1 Soil : Solution ratio).

Achievement/Findings:

The pH with 6% hydrogen peroxide (1:1) was found to be lower than that with water in all the horizons of the four profile. Kawasaki and Mokarun (1978) reported that measurement of pH following H₂O₂ ranged from 0.2 to 2.8 pH unit. In Chakaria profiles the decrease with H₂O₂ exceeded 1 pH unit compared to that of water suspension. On the other hand, the decrease of pH with H₂O₂ in Cheringa-a and Cheringa-b was less than 1 unit. The mean pH difference with H₂O₂ to water suspension in Chakaria profiles was 2.2 and Cheringa-a and Cheringa-b was 0.5 pH unit.
