Comparative Performance of Jinding and Desi Duck in Saline and Non-saline Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performances of two breed-type viz. Jinding and Desi ducks were compared in saline and non-saline area. Two groups of ducks were maintained in identical feed and management in both areas. Each bird was kept separately in cage during night. Production performances were compared from laying of first egg to three months period. Average age and weight at sexual maturity of Jinding duck (144.96 days and 1.38 kg) were significantly (p < 0.01) earlier than Desi duck. Egg production of Jinding duck was significantly (p < 0.01) higher than Desi ducks. Number of eggs obtained from duck of saline area were significantly( p < 0.05) higher than those of non-saline area. Egg weight of Jinding duck (58.19 g) was significantly (p < 0.01) heavier than Desi duck (55.78 g). Egg weight of Jinding duck in saline area was 58.41 g and 57.79 g in non-saline area. Egg weight of Desi duck in saline and non-saline area was 56.97 g and 54.59 g respectively.

Objectives:

To compare early egg laying performance of the Jinding and Desi ducks under extensive farming condition in saline and non-saline area of the coastal belt.

Methodology:

The research was carried out at two villages namely Char Kalmi and Amanatgonj under Noakhali district. Of them, former one was saline and the latter was non-saline area. The saline area has direct access to tidal bore of Bay of Bengal through Jalsera river. This area becomes submerged twice in every 24 hour. Non-saline area includes enclosed surface water bodies like ponds and roadside canal. The period of experiment was from January to April 2003. The number of experimental birds was 100 of which 50 were Jinding and 50 were Desi duck. The two breed-types of ducks were distributed in two different areas, e.g. saline and non-saline area. Therefore, the design of the experiment was a 2 x 2 factorial design. Ten farmers were selected of which five were from saline and five were from non-saline area. Each farmer was given 5 Desi and 5 Jinding ducks. During daytime ducks of all groups were allowed to scavenge in the water bodies as well as farm premises. Apart from scavenging each of the birds was supplemented with 70 gm pellet layer feeds. Ducks were housed in the dwelling house of the farmers during night. To keep individual egg production record each bird was caged separately at night. During experimental period the data on Age and weight at sexual maturity, Egg production, Egg weight and Survivability of experimental ducks were recorded. Proper vaccination schedule was maintained. Samples of water from saline and non-saline areas were collect and analyzed to find out salt content. Salinity was 17.75 (ppt) and 0.30 ppt respectively in saline and non-saline area. The data were compiled and tabulated for statistical analysis in a factorial design. Data were analyzed with Genstat 5 (Release 4.1 PC/Windows 95 Rothamsted Experimental Station) using Least Squares Analysis of Variance (LSANOVA) procedure.

Achievement/Findings:

From the findings, it may be concluded that the area did not have any effect on age at sexual maturity because the birds were distributed among the farmers of experimental area just prior to lay. The present finding on egg weight of Jinding ducks (58.41g) was higher. Some other workers noted egg weight of Desi ducks to be 57.84 to 68.4 g. But present finding was lower than that mentioned above.
