Testing and Performance Evaluation of Small and Experimental Rice Mill

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rubber roll or polyurethane roll husker along with both abrasive and friction type polisher are the most appropriate machines for securing a higher milling yield, as well as head rice recovery depending on the variety. With the automated and semi automated rice mill it is possible to control the degree of polishing, from 3% and above. The head rice recovery of medium long grain (BRRI dhan29) under parboiled condition in small rice mill was 62% and under unparboiled condition was 57%. For short grain (BRRI dhan34) the head rice recovery was 60%, with a very negligible percentage broken at 1%. Moreover, an extra yield of 1.2 mt to 1.8 mt can be obtained if the degree of milling can set as 10% to 5%. The profit margin of the small-scale rice milling factory (1 t/hr) ranged from 25%-30%.

Objectives:

To test the milling performance of modern rice mills

Methodology:

To gain a better insight into the milling technology, disassembled different rice milling machinery (i.e. paddy husker, paddy separator, polishers, bucket elevator etc.) with both small (250-300 kghr^-1) and large capacity (2-3 thr^-1) were provided by KOICA under the “Development of Research Capacity of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute” project. After assembling, the rice milling machineries were installed in the rice milling research laboratory and the milling performance of the machineries was observed. Necessary modifications were made to improve performance and milling for different varieties of paddy. Data were taken in accordance with the experiment, i.e. milling yield, weight of husk, bran, broken rice etc. BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan34 were used as testing material

On the other hand, the broken percentage is little higher for medium and long grain, 4% under parboiled condition and 6-7% under unparboiled condition. Moreover, extra yield can be obtained (1.8 mt to 1.2 mt) if the degree of milling can set as 5% to 10%. The profit margin of a small scale rice milling factory (1 t/hr) ranges from 25%-30%.
