Screening of Germplasm of Jute Against Stem Rot in Sick Bed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted at Jute Agricultural Experimental Station (JAES) at Manikganj in 2016 to identify some selected advance lines against stem rot, the major fungal disease of jute in artificially inoculated sick bed under field condition. Two separate experiments for capsularis and olitorius lines were sown in 3m lines with 3 replications. For capsularis, acc. 2149, 2403 and 2197 had moderately resistant character (MR), and BJC-7370, CVL^-1 was also found resistant (MR) and accession 2147 and 2498 had susceptible reaction against stem rot disease in artificially inoculated sick bed under field condition. Findings revealed that, the olitorius acc.- 2043, 2481, 2483, 2496, 2499, 2712, 2731, 3820 and variety O-9897 had moderately resistant reaction and accessions 2419, 2478, 2727, 2732 had susceptible reaction against stem rot in artificially inoculated sick bed under field condition.

Objectives:

To identify resistant lines of some selected advance lines against the fungal disease to develop disease resistant variety

Methodology:

Two separate experiments for capsularis and olitorius lines were conducted at JAES, Manikganj of BJRI. Promising lines of capsularis and olitorius along with recommended varieties CVL-1 and O-9897 were used as control. Seeds were sown in 3m lines with three replications. Before sowing the seeds, the field was inoculated with the artificial inoculam of Macrophomina phaseolina. Normal agronomical practices was done and fertilizer doses were applied as per recommendation. No plant protection measure was taken till harvesting stage to facilitate the natural disease infestations. The disease samples were collected to identify the pathogen. Scale used for measuring fungal diseases as follows.

Scale

Resistant (R) – 0-10%, Moderately resistant (MR) – 10-20%, Susceptible (S) – 20-30% , Highly Susceptible (HS) - > 30%.

Materials used for capsularis germplasm. Acc. 2147, 2149, 2403, 2498, BJC-2197 and CVL-1and for olitorius, the accessions were Acc.- 2043,2478, 2481 2483, 2496,2499,2712, 2731, 2727, 2732, 3820, 2419 with variety O-9897 and BJC-7370.
