Assessment of Np Composite (npc) Fertilizer on Boro Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted in Boro 2015-16 at two locations: one at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Head Quarter farm, Gazipur and another at BRRI Regional Station farm, Sonagazi, Feni under the supervision of Soil Science Division, BRRI. The soil texture of both locations is common (Clay Loam). The soil of BRRI Head Quarter farm, Gazipur has the neutral reaction having deficient (very low) P level while soil at BRRI Regional Station farm, Sonagazi has the slightly alkaline reaction having medium P level. The experiment of both sites was laid out in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with three replications. The individual plot-size was 6m x 3m. Six treatments were T1= (P control), T2= S control (P source-DAP), T3= DAP (100% N), T4= NP comp. (100% N), T5= DAP (30% less N of T3) and T6= NP comp. (30% less N of T3). The data from the field (yield components) as well as lab analysis (quality parameters) was recorded according to the standard procedures statistically with the software Crop Stat 7.2 version. In both sides, NPC produced grain comparable to DAP with higher or lower doses of N. The net additional income and BCR of NPC was higher than that of DAP in lower doses of N. So, 30%N can be saved by using NPC fertilizer in rice cultivation.

Objectives:

To observe the capability of nitrogen saving for rice cultivation and as well as to find out the performance of this fertilizer for rice production.

Methodology:

Field experiments were conducted in Boro 2015-16 at two locations: one at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) H/Q farm, Gazipur and another at BRRI R/S farm, Sonagazi, Feni under the supervision of Soil Science Division, BRRI. The soil texture of both locations is common (Clay Loam).The soil of BRRI H/Q farm, Gazipur has the neutral reaction having deficient (very low) P level while soil at BRRI R/S farm, Sonagazi has the slightly alkaline reaction having medium P level. The experiment of both sites was laid out in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with three replications. The individual plot-size was 6m x 3m. Six treatments were included in this study. The applied nitrogen from pilled urea (purchased locally). Phosphorus (P) was applied @ 9 kg P/ha from the two sources of P: DAP and N P compound fertilizer (fertilizer to be tested) except T1 (P control). Two doses of N: N150 (in the treatments T1, T2, T3, and T4) and N105 (30% less N of T3 in the treatments T5 and T6) were used. Treatment T2 was tested as S control. The S dose was also adjusted with gypsum in case of N P C. All treatments had received a blanket dose of K-Zn @ 60-4 kg /ha, respectively. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal at final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal splits: one third as basal, one third at active tillering stage and the reston third at 7 days before panicle initiation stage. As DAP and NPC contain N, therefore, the N dose was adjusted with using of pilled urea. As cold was lengthening, so around 60 days old seedlings of BRRI dhan29 were transplanted on last week of January in both locations. Irrigation, weeding and other cultural management practices were done equally as per needed. At maturity the crop was harvested manually from an area of 5 m2 at 15 cm above ground level for grain yield, however, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at the ground level for straw yield data.The grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis. Plant height, tiller and panicle number per square meter, panicle length, % sterility, %filled grain, grain per panicle and 1000 grain weight were also recorded. All the obtained data were analyzed statistically with the software Crop Stat 7.2 version.

Achievement/Findings:

The effect of N P C fertilizer in Boro rice cultivation seems very promising.NPC produced grain comparable to DAP with higher or lower doses of N.The net additional income and BCR of NPC was higher than that of DAP in lower doses of N. So, 30% N can be saved by using NPC fertilizer in rice cultivation.
