Studies on the Electrical Properties of Low Temperature Plasma Treatment of Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The pre-treatment and finishing of textile by low temperature plasma (LTP) technologies become more and more popular as a surface modification technique. Plasma treatment changes only the upper most atomic layers of a material surface without interfering the bulk properties. Plasma surface modification does not require the use of water and chemicals, resulting in a more economical and ecological process.

Jute fibre is such a soft natural fibre extracted from the jute plants and is extensively grown in Bangladesh. It is the second most important vegetable fibre after cotton, in terms of usage, global consumption, production, and availability. In this aspect the present study is concerned to investigate the effects of LTP treatment of jute fibre by glow discharge technique and show a road map so that diversification can be made of this ancient natural low cost fibre.

Objectives:

To observe the changes of electrical properties of raw jute fibre by low temperature plasma treatment of jute

Methodology:

Raw jute fibre was collected from BJRI. Ar and O2 gases were collected from the Bangladesh Oxygen Ltd., Dhaka. A locally fabricated capacitively coupled plasma polymerization system situated in the solid state laboratory, department of physics, BUET has been used in the present work of treatment of jute fibre.

Achievement/Findings:

The values of dielectric constant are almost constant in the low frequency region and above this frequency it falls gradually with the increase of frequency.
