Groundwater Arsenic Contamination for Irrigation in Most Affected 10 Districts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Contamination of natural arsenic (As) in groundwaters of Bangladesh has drawn the attention. A nationwide survey was initiated to know the current Arsenic (As) contamination in deep tube well (DTW) and shallow tube well (STW) irrigation water of Bangladesh. Water samples were taken from most As effected 10 districts as Mymensingh, Gopalgonj, Faridpur, Magura, Rajbari, Shatkhira, Netrokona, Madaripur, Sariatpur and Sherpur. One DTW was chosen from every union of every upazilla of the selected districts, water sample was also collected from shallow tube well (STW) and hand tube well (HTW) nearest from the DTW. Total 128 DTW, 46 STW and 82 HTW water samples was collected from 131 unions, 34 upazillas. Depth was 168-500 ft for DTW, 30-280 ft for STW and 40-700 ft for HTW. Water sample was taken in a 125 ml plastic vial from DTW after 15 minutes running. 90 ml DTW water was collected with 10 ml 2 M HCl to protect from precipitation or any chemical change. As was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with hydride generation system (HG-AAS) in soil science laboratory, BINA, Mymensingh. The results showed that 27.3% DTW water contain >200 ppb As, 47.7% contain >50 ppb As and 52.3% water contain As below risk limit (<50 ppb). 26.1% STW water contain >200 ppb As, 41.3% contain >50 ppb As and 32.6% water contain As below risk limit (<50 ppb). 28.0% HTW water contain >200 ppb As, 20.7% contain >50 ppb As and 51.2% water contain As below risk limit (<50 ppb). The highest DTW water As (474.4 ppb) was recorded from Faridpur sadar and the highest STW water As (619.5 ppb) was found in Gopalgonj and highest HTW water As (905.08 ppb) was recorded from, Shariatpur district. The range of As concentration in DTW water varied from 1.4 to 474.7 ppb, STW, 1.4 to 619.5 ppb and HTW, 0 to 701.3 ppb with an mean value of 293.6, 117.6 and 342.2 ppb for DTW, STW and HTW, respectively.

Objectives:
