Effect of Magnesium, Zinc and Boron on Yield and Nutrient Uptake by Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Quantitative information regarding effects of Magnesium, Boron and Zinc in wheat (Triticum aestivum) is scarce. Application of these nutrients can ensure the availability of nutrients to crops for obtaining higher yield. To study the effect of magnesium, zinc and boron on yield and nutrient uptake by wheat, a field experiment was conducted at Birgonj, Dinajpur under the Old Himalayan Piedmont plain soil during rabi season of 2013 with wheat crop (var. Prodip) to evaluate the optimum and economic rate of Mg, Zn and B. The experiment was designed with eight treatments and carried out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatment combinations were T1: (control), T2: Mg, T3: Zn, T4: B, T5: Mg+B, T6: Zn+B, T7: Mg+Zn and T8: Mg+Zn+B. Mg, Zn and B were applied @ 6, 2 and 1 kg ha^-1 respectively. All the plots received an equal rate of N, P, K and and S (N₁₀₀ P₂₅ K₇₅ S₁₃) to support normal plant growth. The grain and straw yields of wheat were significantly influenced due to the application of different treatment combinations of Mg, Zn and B. The grain yield varied from 3.18 to 4.35 t ha^-1. The highest grain (4.35 t ha^-1) was recorded in the treatment T8 with the combined application of Mg, Zn and B which gave 27% higher yield over control followed by the treatment T7. Mg, Zn and B uptake by wheat crop were significantly influenced by different treatments. The highest nutrient uptake by both grain and straw was obtained from the treatment T8 and the lowest was obtained in control. The findings from the present study revealed that Mg, Zn and B along with NPKS are essential to obtained higher yield of wheat crop than that of the application of NPKS alone.

Objectives:

To examine the response of Mg, Zn and B fertilization on wheat crop under the old Himalayan piedmont soil.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at farmer’s field Birgonj, Dinajpur under the Old Himalayan Piedmont plain soil during rabi season of 2013. Wheat (var. Prodip) was used as test crop. Eight treatment combinations were used with Mg, Zn and B such as T1: (control), T2: Mg, T3: Zn, T4: B, T5: Mg+B, T6: Zn+B, T7: Mg+Zn and T8: Mg+Zn+B. Mg, Zn and B were applied @ 6, 2 and 1 kg ha^-1 respectively. The experiment was conducted following RCBD with three replications for each treatment. Initial soil sample were collected for physical and chemical analysis. After collecting soil sample, the unwanted materials like gravels, plant roots, leaves etc., were picked up and removed. Then the samples were air dried, well mixed and ground to pass through a 20 mesh sieve and stored in clean plastic bags for physical and chemical analysis. Soil samples were analyzed following standard method such as soil pH was determined by glass electrode pH meter (1:2.5 soil-water ratio), Particle-size distribution (%) was analyzed using the hydrometer method, organic matter estimated by wet oxidation method total nitrogen was determined by Kjeldahl method, available P was determined by Olsen method, available S was estimated by turbidity method exchangeable K and Mg was determined by extraction with 1M NH₄OAc at pH 7 and their content were measured by flame photometer available B was determined by the Hunter method and available Zn was extracted by DPTA method, measured by AAS.
The nutrient uptake was calculated using the nutrient content of respective element in the plant samples. A common basal dose of N, P, K and and S (N₁₀₀ P₂₅ K₇₅ S₁₃) was applied to each plot. The source of N, P, K, S, Mg, Zn and B was urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide and borax respectively. Nitrogen was applied in three equal splits. One-third of urea was applied as basal to the individual plots during final land preparation. The second split of urea was applied 30 days after sowing i.e. at maximum tillering stage and the remaining split at 55 days after sowing i.e. at spike initiation stage. Wheat seed (var. Prodip) at the rate of 120 kg ha^-1 was sown on 20 November 2013. The seeds were sown in rows 20 cm apart. Intercultural operations viz. weeding, irrigation and insecticide spray were done as and when required. The crop was harvested at maturity on 18 March 2014. Data on yield and yield contributing characters of wheat were recorded. Observations were made on yield components from 10 randomly selected plants per plot. After harvesting, the grain and straw samples were collected plot wise, oven dried and ground.

The data collected were statistically analyzed to obtain the level of significance using MSTAT-C and the means were separated by Dunkan's Multiple Range Test.
