Photosynthesis, Dry Matter Production and Yield Performance of Lentil Varieties Under Water Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Water stress is one of the most prevalent forms of environmental stress that limits plant growth and yield. Lentil (Lens esculenta Medik.) is an important pulse crop with high protein content, has the potential capacity to combat nutritional deficiencies in developing regions and countries. It is commonly grown under rain fed condition, conserves moisture from preceding monsoon season and usually faces water stress. Efforts can be given to increase area as well as yield of lentil crops by the use of water stress tolerant variety. A pot experiment was carried out with five lentil varieties during November 2017 to February 2018 to assess the effects of water stress on photosynthesis, chlorophyll content (SPAD reading) in leaves, dry mass production, yield attributes and yield. Control (75% FC), 60, 45 and 30% FC water stress were imposed on Binamasur-2, Binamasur-4, Binamasur-5, Binamasur-10 and BARI masur-5 at flowering starting stage and continued until flowering ceased. The experiment was laid out in a Complete Randomized Design with three replications. Chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate were measured at 10 days after water stress imposed. Data on yield and yield attributes were also recorded at maturity. The collected data were analyzed statistically. Photosynthesis and yield attributes decreased with increasing water stress. The highest seed and photosynthetic rate were found in control plants and the lowest was recorded in 30% water stress condition. Under stress condition, the highest grain yield was recorded in Binamasur-5 and the lowest was observed in Binamasur-2. The lowest yield reduction under water stress was recorded in Binamasur-5 and the highest in Binamasur-10. Among the varieties, Binamasur-5 showed tolerance to water stress.

Achievement/Findings:

Photosynthesis, yield attributes and yield of lentil varieties decreased under water stress and Binamasur-5 was found tolerant to water stress.
