Effect of Defoliation at Reproductive Stage on Yield in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two field experiments were conducted at BINA substations, Ishurdi and Magura during March to May 2018 to assess the effect of different levels of defoliation on grain yield of two mungbean varieties viz., Binamoog-7 and Binamoog-8. The defoliation levels were: i) control, ii) 50% leaves defoliation from bottom, iii) 50% leaves defoliation from top and iv) 100% defoliation. The defoliation treatments were imposed at flowering starting stage. At harvest, seed yield and yield related data were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically. Total dry matter, seed yield and yield related parameters were greater in control plants than the defoliated plants. However, 50% leaf defoliation from bottom was less affected than 50% leaf defoliation from top. Seed yield and yield attributes were drastically reduced in 100% defoliation. Binamoog-8 was less affected than Binamoog-7 due to defoliation.

Methodology:

Two field experiments were conducted with Binamoog-7 and Binamoog-8 at BINA sub-stations Ishurdi and Magura during March to May 2018. The defoliation levels were: i) control, ii) 50% leaves defoliation from bottom, iii) 50% leaves defoliation from top and iv) 100% defoliation. The defoliation treatments were imposed at flowering starting stage. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete design with three replication. Recommended fertilizers and cultural practices were followed. At harvest, yield and yield attributes were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Yield and yield attributes of mungbean varieties drastically reduced with 100% leaf defoliation. 50% leaf defoliation from bottom was less affected than 50% leaf defoliation from top. Binamoog-8 was less affected than Binamoog-7 due to defoliation.
