A research works on the effect of compost and different inorganic fertilizers on growth, yield and nutrient content of boro rice (BRRI dhan29) was conducted at the Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) Farm, Dhaka during period of 2013. The research works consisted of 4 doses compost (C) (C0=0%, C1=50%, C2=75% and C3=100% of recommended dose) and 4 doses of inorganic fertilizers (F) (F0=0%, F1=50%, F2=75% and F3=100% of recommended dose) (Urea, TSP and MoP) which were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) taking sixteen treatments with three replications. The treatment combinations were C0F0, C0F1, C0F2, C0F3, C1F0, C1F2, C1F2, C1F3 C2F0, C2F1, C2F2, C2F3, C3F0, C3F1, C3F2 and C3F3. At harvest stage the tallest plant height, longest panicle, the maximum number of filled grains/panicle, the highest  weight of 1000 seeds, the maximum grain yield, straw yield, benefit cost ratio and different properties of soil (soil pH, organic matter, %N, P ppm and K meq/100 g soil) was recorded from treatment combination C3F3 (100% compost and 100% inorganic fertilizer) and C3F2 (100% compost and 75% inorganic fertilizer) whereas the lowest plant, the shortest panicle, the minimum filled grains /panicle, the lowest weight of 1000 seeds, the lowest grain yield, straw yield, benefit cost ratio and different properties of soil were observed from control treatment. The findings of the study suggest that combined use of compost (household waste) and fertilizer is more important for sustainable production of boro rice. However, further research is necessary to make conclusive remarks.

To see the effect of compost and different inorganic fertilizers on the growth, yield and nutrient content of Boro Rice

The experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm (SAU Farm), Dhaka during the boro season of 2013. The site of the experiment (SAU Farm) is in the 23°74 N latitude and 90°35 E longitudes with an elevation of   8.2m above flood level. This soil belongs to the Modhupur tract under Agro-Ecolological Zone 28 (AEZ-28). The climate of the experimental area is characterized by a scanty rainfall associated with moderately low temperature in the rabi season (October-March). The land was first opened by a tractor and prepared thoroughly by ploughing and cross ploughing with a power tiller and country plough. Finally each plot was prepared by puddling. The experiment was laid out  in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three blocks. Each block was furnished 16 treatments combinations with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 1.5m x 2m and block was separated by 70 cm drains. Allocation of all the treatments was made at random in each block. Before land preparation, initial composite soil sample were collected at 0-15 cm depth from different spots and prepared for physical and chemical analysis. Factor A : Organic manures (Compost)- 4 levels (0, 50, 75 and 100% level of treatments of the recommended doses of Urea, TSP and MoP). Factor B: Inorganic fertilizers (Urea, TSP and MoP) - 4 levels (0, 50, 75 and 100% level of treatments of the recommended doses of Urea, TSP and MoP). Fertilizer recommendation guide, BARC, 2012. So, there were 16 treatment combinations were C0F0, C0F1, C0F2, C0F3, C1F0, C1F2, C1F2,  C1F3  C2F0, C2F1,  C2F2, C2F3, C3F0,  C3F1,  C3F2  and C3F3.  Full  amounts  of  TSP,  MoP,  gypsum  and  zinc sulphate were applied as basal dose before transplanting of rice seedlings. Urea were applied in 3 equal splits: one third was applied at basal before transplanting, one third at active tillering stage and the rest one third was applied at 7 days before panicle initiation stage. Compost were applied before six days of final land preparation. Five weeks old seedlings of BRRI dhan29 were transplanted in the plot on 25 January 2014. The line to line distances 20 cm and hill to hill 15 cm distances were maintained. Three seedlings per hill were transplanted. When 80-90% of the grains become golden yellow in color maturity of crop  was determined.  .The  harvesting of BRRI  dhan29 was done on May 10, 2014. The grains were cleaned and sun dried to a moisture content of 12-13%. Straw was also sun dried properly. Finally grain and straw yields (kg/plot) were determined and converted to ton ha-1. A partial budget was estimated which is useful to analyze relatively small changes in the farm business (Kay, 1981). Benefit cost ratios has been calculated for finding the most profitable combination in terms of total and net revenue and finally estimated economic analysis. The soil and manure samples were collected, processed and analyzed for N, P and K. The The N, P and K concentration of  compost were 0.98, 0.65 and 0.78 % respectively. The N concentration of compost from household waste was determined by Micro-Kjeldahl method. The available P were determined by ascorbic acid blue color method (Olsen et al., 1954). Exchangeable K were determined by using flame photometer. The statistical analysis was done using the MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986) computer package program. Analysis of variance was done following two factors randomized complete block design. The mean differences among the treatments were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance.

From the above results it can be concluded that the combined use of compost(Household wastes) and with inorganic fertilizers performed better on all growth and yield parameters and as well as post harvest properties of soil in boro rice (BRRI dhan29) than inorganic fertilizer alone. From the result, it is expected that rice yields can be maintained on recommended doses of inorganic fertilizer when used in conjunction with compost (household waste)
