Character Association and Path Analysis in Hybrid Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Grain yield mostly depends on net result of yield contributing traits while information related to the association between yield and its components. Hence the present investigation was carried out to study the associations and direct and indirect effect of yield contributing traits on 11 test cross rice hybrids. Character association of the yield and its contributing traits revealed that single plant yield was positively and highly significantly associated with plant height, effective tillers per hill, filled grains per panicle, number of spikelets per panicle and spikelet fertility percentage. Path coefficient analysis also revealed that individual panicle weight and effective tillers per hill expressed high and positive direct effect on grain yield. Such attributes could be utilized as the selection indices for higher grain yield.

Objectives:

The present study was conducted to explore any influence on correlations among the characters highly responsible for high yield potential.

Methodology:

The present study was conducted at the experimental field of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during T. Aman season 2015. The eleven testcross (F₁) rice hybrids including three checks BR11, BRRI dhan49 and BRRI hybrid dhan4 were evaluated in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Twenty-one-days old seedlings were transplanted using single seedling per hill at a spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm. Fertilizer doses were 150:100:70:60:10 kg Urea- TSP-MP- Gypsum- ZnSO₄ per hectare respectively. Except urea all other fertilizers were used as basal dose and urea fertilizer was top dressed in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplant. Standard crop management practices were done as and when necessary. Five plants were selected randomly from each entry in each replication to record data on ten quantitative traits viz., days to maturity, plant height, effective tillers per hill, panicle length, number of filled grains, number of unfilled grains per panicle, total number of spikelets per panicle, thousand seed weight, spikelet fertility percentage, panicle weight and single plant yield. Statistical analyses for the above characters were done through PLBSTAT for correlation coefficient and R software for path analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The performance of the different test cross rice hybrid for grain yield and different yield contributing characters were evaluated. Plant height, effective tillers per hill, number of filled grains, total number of spikelet per panicle, spikelet fertility percentage and panicle weight had significant positive association with single plant yield. The results of path coefficient analysis revealed that among the ten yield contributing characters eight characters showed positive direct effect on grain yield whereas individual panicle weight had the highest positive direct effect and panicle length had the lowest positive direct effect on grain yield. Such results indicated that direct selection based on these characters would be effective for yield improvement.
