Effect of Stocking Density on Growth and Production Performance of Mono Sex (male) Tilapia (oreochromis Niliticus)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present research was conducted to investigate the effects of stocking density on the growth and production performances of mono sex Tilapia (Orechromis niloticus) in nine ponds. Before starting the experiment, ponds were cleared off aquatic vegetation by repeated cutting. Predatory and other undesirable species were removed by using of seine and cast nets. The ponds were limed at a dose of 250 kg/ha. The experiment was conducted with three treatments i.e. three stocking densities such as T₁ (200), T₂(250) and T₃ (300) each having three replications. Fertilization such as Urea and TSP were applied in the ponds at a rate of 100 kg/ha, in a proportion of 2:1. The fish were hand fed twice a daily with a mixture of feeds (24.25% protein) composed of 30% rice bran, 30% wheat bran, 20% wheat flour and 20% fish meal at a rate of 5% (1st month), 4% (2nd month) and 3% up to harvesting of their body weight. The water quality parameters were monitored fortnightly and the ranges were: temperature 26.30 to 33.000C, dissolved oxygen 4.70 to 6.40, pH 7.70 to 8.25 and transparency 25.33 to 35.60 cm. The result of the present study showed that, the fish in T₁stocked a rate of 200 fish/decimal resulted the best individual weight gain (47.03g) followed by T₂ (42.38g) and T₃ (39.93g), respectively. The productions were 8.53, 9.33 and 9.63 kg/decimal in T₁, T₂, and T₃, respectively.

Objectives:

Methodology:

1) Study area selection i) The pond banks and embankments will be raised and repaired properly in broken places. ii) The ponds will be cleared off aquatic vegetation by repeated cutting. Predatory and other undesirable species will be removed by use seine and cast nets. iii) Rotenone will used in ponds to make sure about the complete removal of unwanted fishes and other species. iv) The ponds will be limed at a dose of 250 kg/ha.

Achievement/Findings:
