To investigate the influence of salinity on germination characters and seedling growth thirty wheat genotypes were tested in petridish under control and saline (15 dS m-1) condition at Crop Physiology and Ecology Laboratory, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during the period from September to October 2013. Speed of germination as expressed by rate of germination and germination vigor index of all wheat genotypes was reduced due to salinity. Shoot length and root length and seedling dry weight of 10 days old seedlings were found to be affected due to salinity. But the magnitude of reduction of these parameters due to salinity was not similar for all wheat genotypes. Salt tolerance index (STI) of thirty wheat genotypes based on shoot length, root length and seedling dry weight at salt stress indicated a wide difference in stress tolerance among the wheat genotypes. Considering shoot and root length, seedling dry weight and early seedling growth Sourav, Shatabdi, Sufi, BARI Gom 25, BARI Gom 27 and BAW 1186 were found as more salt tolerant and BAW 1199 was found as salt sensitive wheat genotypes.

To find out the influence of salinity on germination characters and seedling growth of wheat genotypes.

The experiment was conducted at Crop Physiology and Ecology Laboratory, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during the period from September to October 2013. The experiment was carried out in two factors completely randomized design with three replications. One factor consisted of two salinity levels (Control and 15 dS m-1) and the other factor consisted of thirty wheat genotypes including advance lines and popular varieties. Seeds of thirty wheat genotypes collected from Wheat Research Centre (WRC) of BARI, Dinajpur, Bangladesh were surface sterilized by dipping the seeds in 0.01% mercuric chloride solution for 2 minutes and rinsed thoroughly with sterilized water. Saline solution (15 dS m-1) was prepared dissolving calculated amount of NaCl in tap water and salinity was adjusted using EC meter. Tap water was used as control. 25 seeds of each genotype were placed in petridish (11 cm diameter) on sand bed irrigated with saline and control solution as per treatment and were kept at room temperature. The petridishes were irrigated daily with required amount of solution. For each salinity level, three batches of petridishes were used. Seedlings were allowed to grow up to 10 days after placement of germination. Germination was counted at 24-hour interval and continued up to 7th day (168 hrs). A seed was considered germinated as plumule and radicle came out and were >2 mm long. The rate of germination was calculated using the formula as described by Krishnasamy and Seshu (1990) and co-efficient of germination and vigor index were calculated using the formulae as described by Copeland (1976). At 6th day after placement for germination, all other seedlings were removed from each petridish keeping 10 healthy seedlings and allowed to grow up to 10 days by adding required amount of respective solution daily. At 10 days after placement for germination, five seedlings from each petridish were sampled. Shoot and root length of individual seedling were recorded manually with scale. Then the seedlings were dried separately at 700C for 72 h in an electric oven (Model- E28# 03-54639, Binder, Germany) and weight were recorded with an electrical balance (Model- AND EK- 300 i). The mean length (cm) and dry weight were calculated for each treatment combination. Stress tolerance index was calculated as Goudarzi and Pakniyat (2008). Data were analyzed by partitioning the total variance with the help of computer using MSTATC program.

Based on early seedling growth (shoot length, root length and seedling dry weight) Sourav, Shatabdi, Sufi, BARI Gom 25, BARI Gom 27 and BAW 1186 were found as more salt tolerant and BAW 1199 was found as salt sensitive wheat genotypes.
