Carp Culture: Cost-return and Profit Analysis of Rajshahi District, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Carps are being cultured in Rajshahi District in several forms like in the nursery pond, in the rearing pond, in the grow-out pond, and recently in Beels. A research was designed on the polyculture of both native and exotic major carp concerning the total cost involved and the total return obtained with an objective to find out the profit status of carp culture in the Rajshahi region. In this study, a clear relation is found between the total investment cost and total return. The maximum cost was found to be involved in the nursery pond and the minimum cost in Beel Mail was 223,052.00 and 3417.00 taka ha^-1, respectively. Similarly, total return has also come from nursery pond culture system and minimum return from Beel Mail as 475,500.00 and 4030.00 taka ha^-1, respectively. But the rate of profit in contrast to investment was found maximum in the case of grow-out pond and minimum in Beel Mail as, 154 and 17%, respectively. However, the profit percentage of different pond culture systems is more or less similar but significantly different from in Beel culture system.

Objectives:

To find out the profit status of carp culture in the Rajshahi region.

Methodology:

All the data were taken from the carp farmer's deferent Upazilla of Rajshahi districts. Carp farmers were selected randomly. The survey on the cost and return of carp farms of Rajshahi was conducted during 2006-2007 under the fisheries department of Rajshahi University. Upazilla fisheries office, several NGO's and the Fisheries Department of Rajshahi University provide details for sampling and data collection procedures as well as the instruments of the survey. Based on the current carp culture practices in several ways, the sample carp farms were broadly classified as nursery rearing, fingerling rearing, grow-out rearing, and Beel rearing. The survey covers different types of costing and returns from all sorts of cultural systems. Here, for the study 8 nursery ponds, 15 rearing ponds, 60 grow-out ponds, and 2 Beels were included. The average pond area of the nursery ponds was 0.12 ha, the rearing and grow-out pond was 0.5 ha and Beel was 100 ha. The fanners do not own most of the carp cultured ponds. Maximum culture ponds were perennial but several nursery ponds were seasonal with lower water depth. Almost all the sample farmers practiced polyculture of several native and exotic carp species and a few non-carp species (SIS and tilapia). Species cultured by the majority of the sample farmers are Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822) (99%), Catla catla (Hamilton, 1822) (99%), Cirrhinus cirrhosus (91%) and Chinese carps i.e., Cyprinus carpi() (69%), Hypophthalmichthys molotrix (58%), Ctenopharyngodon idellus (42%). Stocking density was about 4.14±1.29 kg sac fry h^-1 an in nursery pond, 53.5±2.5 kg ha^-1 in rearing pond, 9640.5+3850.66 nos ha^-1 in the grow-out pond, 500 nos ha^-1 in beel. On average fishes were harvested when they weighed 8-10 g in nursery pond, 30-60 g in rearing pond, and about 700 g in the grow-out pond with these values somewhat smaller than grow-out pond for Beek The product obtained from all the ponds by using supplementary feeds like oil cake, rice bran, wheat barn, maize meal and somewhere, fishmeal and vitamin premix. Data were collected in two ways like a Secondary survey and field visit. For the secondary survey help of several NGOs and the Upazilla fisheries office were taken. From there, a previous record of culture inputs cost of carp culture and total production was collected. And field survey was done with the help of a pre-prepared questionnaire. With this questionnaire proforma individual farmer's interview was taken. For cross-checks of the data FGD (Focus Group Discussion) method was also followed.
