Investigation of Diseases of Juvenile Thai Koi, Anabas Testudineus from Farming System of Mymensingh Region, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to investigation of diseases and culture of Thai koi Anabas testudineus over a period of 165 days from 29 September 2010 to 13 March 2011 in nine earthen ponds located in the northern side of the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Three stocking densities such as 500/decimal (T₁), 750/decimal (T₂) and 1000/decimal (T₃) were tested with the three replications. The water quality parameters were monitored at fortnightly interval. The mean value of water temperature in T₁, T₂ and T₃ was 23.25 ± 1.95°C , dissolved oxygen content were 5.0 ± 1.33 ng/Lm 4.95 ± 1.32 mg/L and 5.05 ± 1.11, pH were 7.50 ± 0.20, 7.62 ± 0.28 and 7.70 ± 0.336 and alkalinity were 171.00 ± 19.12, 168.00 ± 18.14 and 164.00 ± 25.47 respectively. At the end of the study the mean specific growth rates of Thai koi were 0.89%, 0.85% and 0.84% the average weight gain (g) were 43.69 ± 0.11, 36.69 ± 1.90 and 36.36 ± 0.29 in T₁, T₂ and T₃ respectively. The survival rates were 95.08%, 95.49% and 88.00% in T₁, T₂ and T₃ respectively. Fish productions were 5557.50 kg/ha, 7043.62 kg/ha and 8558.55 kg/ha in T₁, T₂ and T₃ respectively. The result demonstrated significantly higher mean production and net benefit in T₃ than in T₁ and T₂ (P<0.05). The experiment was also carried out to investigate the health and diseases status of Thai koi for seven months during the September 2010 to March 2011. Clinically, it was observed that fish were affected with scale loss, rough skin discoloration and dermal ulcer during the winter season.

Objectives:

1) To carry out control research on growth and health condition of juvenile Thai Koi in ponds around Fisheries Faculty, BAU. 2) To know the water quality parameters of investigated farms and ponds. 3) To determine diseases in juvenile Thai Koi through clinical and histopathological procedures. 4) To know monthly variation of diseases in juvenile Thai Koi. 5) To treat the affected fish by various chemotherapeutants. 6) To sort out possible preventive measures.

Methodology:

The proposed research will be designed for a period of two years starting from July 2009. A preliminary survey will be carried for the selection of six fish farms from Trishal, Bailor and Bhaluka where Thai Koi culture is going on. Through such survey previous history of disease occurrence on fishes will be recorded. Following farm condition, a control culture of Thai Koi will be carried out at BAU fish ponds near Fisheries Faculty Building. Water quality parameters like temperature, D.O., PH, hardness will be determined monthly from the investigated ponds. Affected Thai Koi collected from different farms and BAU culture ponds will be treated by various recommended chemotherapeutants to observe possible disease recovery measures. Almost similar procedure will be repeated in the second year with other three new farms in order to make the result more authentic.

Achievement/Findings:

Histopathologically, in the months of December and January, necrosis and vacuums were observed in skin and muscle. Gill of the Thai koi were affected with loss of primary and secondary gill lamellae, necrosis and hemorrhage in the months of December and January. In case of liver and kidney necrosis, pyknosis, vacuums and hemorrhages were observe d in the months of December and January. However, increased clinical and pathological signs were observed in T2 and T3 in December and January. During the FGD, farmers also mentioned that diseases like EUS and tail and fin rot were the dominant diseases especially in the months of December and January.
