A field experiment was conducted to assess content and uptake of major nutrients nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), Potassium (K) and Sulpher (S) and to recommend optimum fertilizers dose for short-duration mustard variety BARI Sarisha-14. There were eight treatments viz. T1=100% soil test based (STB) nutrients as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide (FRG), T2=T1+ 25% N of FRG, T3=T1+ 25% NP of FRG, T4=T1+ 25% NK of FRG, T5=T1+ 25% PK of FRG, T6=T1+ 25% NPK of FRG, T7=75% of T1 and T8= native nutrient (control). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were collected on nutrients (N, P, K and S) content and uptake by the short duration mustard BARI Sarisha-14. Nutrient rates had significant effects on nutrients (N, P, K and S) content and uptake by short- duration mustard BARI Sarisha-14. Nitrogen content in mustard grain ranged from 3.49 to 3.75%. The highest total N, P, K and S content amounting 3.75, 0.93, 0.93 and 0.72%, respectively in mustard grain were recorded in T6, T4, T6 and T6, respectively. However, nutrient contents of the treatments T4, T5 and T6 are statistically similar. The highest amount of N, P, K and S) uptake in mustard grain was found in T6 treatment having 76.79, 15.45, 61.75 and 12.09 kg ha-1. Application of 25% NPK in addition to the STB dose (T6) increased more availability and uptake of N, P, K and S in mustard plant that might have positive impact on the performance of short-duration mustard variety. It could be concluded that short-duration mustard like BARI Sarisha-14 having nutritional package like additional 25% NPK along with STB dose might be introduced in Transplant Aman-Boro cropping pattern to increase productivity.

To assess the content and uptake at different nutrient doses based on soil test to develop a fertilizer recommendation for such short-duration mustard variety.

The field trial was conducted at the central research firm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur. during Rabi season of 2013-2014 to find out the requirement of nutrient such as N, P, K, S for BARI Sharisha-14 which was released as a short-duration variety of mustard. It is characterized by comparatively high rainfall, high humidity, high temperature, relatively long day period during April to September and scanty rainfall, low humidity, low temperature, and short day period during October to March. Time within the later period is favorable for mustard cultivation. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m × 3m and the seeds were sown continuously in rows. Eight treatments T1 = 100% soil test based (STB) nutrients as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide (BARC, 2018), T2 = T1 + 25% N of FRG, T3 = T1  + 25% NP of FRG, T4 = T1  + 25% NK of FRG, T5 = T1  + 25% PK of FRG, T6 =  T1 + 25% NPK of FRG, T7 = 75% of T1 and T8 = Native fertility (Control) were tested in the experiment. Whole amount of P, K, S, Zn and half of N were applied at the time of final land preparation and remaining N was applied 20 days after sowing of mustard seeds. Nitrogen content in grain and straw of plant was analyzed by Micro-kjeldahl method (Bremner and Mulvaney, 1982). Exactly 0.1 g sample was digested in fume hood with 10 ml concentrated H2SO4 in presence of K2SO4 catalyst mixture (K2SO4: CuSO4: Se = 10: 1: 1). The digest was then transferred to distillation flask and 5 ml 40% NaOH was added. Nitrogen was estimated by titrating the distillate trapped in H3BO3 indicator solution with 0.02N H2SO4. Total phosphorus content of different plant parts were determined by using vanadomolybdate method (Yoshida et al. 1972). Dried plant materials were digested with concentrated HNO3 and HClO4 mixture (5:2) for determination of total P content. Total P content in the extract was determined by Jackson (1973) using double beam spectrophotometer at 440 nm wave length. Calculation: P in ppm = ppm P (Found from the curve) x Dilution factor % P= ppm P x 10-4; Total potassium was also determined by using Perchloric acid digestion assay method (Yamakawa, 1992). Dried plant materials were digested with concentrated HNO3 and HClO4 mixture (5:2) for determination of total K content. The concentration of K was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer at 766 nm wave length. Calculation- K in ppm = ppm K (Found from the curve) x Dilution factor % K= ppm K x 10-4; Dried plant materials were digested with concentrated HNO3 and HClO4 mixture (5:2) for determination of total S content which is known as nitric perchloric acid digestion method. Sulfur was estimated through turbid metric method using BaCl2. 2H2O by double Beam Spectrophotometer at 420 nm wave length. Calculation- S in ppm = ppm S (Found from the curve) x Dilution factor % S= ppm S x 10-4; Nutrient uptake by plants from soil was calculated by using the following formula: Nutrient uptake = %A x Y/100 Kg ha-1; Where % A = Nutrient (N, P, K and S) concentration of grain and stover; Y = Dry matter production of grain stover-1 (kg ha-1) Data thus collected on different parameters were analyzed with the help of MSTAT-C program and mean differences among the treatment were adjusted by using the Least Significance Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.

Better performances in respect of nutrient (N, P, K and S) content and uptake in grain and stover of short-duration mustard BARI Sharisha-14 was obtained the treatment (T6) where applied 25% NPK in addition along with the STB recommended fertilizer dose. Application of more N, P, K and Sin T6 (STB fertilizer dose + 25% NPK of FRG) treatment provided more availability of the nutrients in mustard plant. It could be recommended that short-duration mustard like BARI Sarisha-14 with nutritional package like additional 25% NPK together with STB dose might be introduced in Transplant Aman-Boro cropping pattern to obtain higher yield and productivity.
