Effects of Organic Manure on Production Performance and Nutritive Values of Different Napier Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Pachutia Research Station in BLRI to evaluate the effects of different organic manure types on the production performance and nutritive value of five Napier cultivars (Napier Hybrid, Napier Vietnam, MerkEron, Wruk-wona And Bajra). The experiment was established 27 May, 2014 on a 100m x 100m land area in a 5 x 5 factorial experiment in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of five different manure types (Bioslurry, Layer dropping, Broiler dropping, Goat dropping and Control fertilizer) and five Napier Varieties (Napier Hybrid, Napier Vietnam, MerkEron, Wruk-wona And Bajra) having a total of 25 treatments combination with 4 replications. Green fodder from each plot was harvested manually after 60 days (1^st cutting) of transplantation approximately 5-6 cm above the ground. The result showed significant difference (p<0.05) in manure types in case of biomass yield, plant height, number of hill, stem wt., sheath wt., leaf wt., DM and CP. Grasses planted on plot treated with layer manure had the highest significant values (p<0.05) for biomass yield (258.67 MT/ha). Napier Hybrid had the highest significant values (p<0.05) for mean biomass yield (221.27 MT/ha), plant height (226.52cm), no. of hill (105.29), no. of tiller/hill (14.65). When control fertilizer was used plant height (215.76cm), no. of hill (104.34), leaf wt. (332.40 g/kg), DM (15.10%) had the highest significant (p<0.05) values and ash (8.76%) and stem wt. (517.60 g/kg) had the lowest significant values. When broiler dropping was used crude protein (12.36%) and ash (10.12%) was higher. In case of ADF% and NDF% Napier Vietnam showed the higher result when bioslurry was used and that were 50.79% and 56.96% respectively. From the results it can be concluded that irrespective of variety and manure application if Napier hybrid is cultivated with layer manure it shows the best performances in terms of biomass yield and Napier Vietnam cultivated with broiler droppings in terms of CP content.

Objectives:

To determine the biomass yield & nutritive value of different high yielding Napier cultivars.

Methodology:

Experimental Site: The experiment was conducted at the Pachutia Research Station, Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), Savar, Dhaka. The chemical analysis of Napier cultivars sample was done in the Animal Nutrition Laboratory of BLRI. Design of the experiment: The experiment was conducted in a 5X5 factorial experiment in Completely Randomized Design (CRD). (Variety = 5, Manure type = 5, Total no. of Plots: 100, Plot Size: 10ft x 10ft Plant to plant distance= 1 ft , Row to row distance= 1 ft, Plot to plot distance= 2 ft) Fertilizer preparation and application: Bio-slurry was collected from the biogas plant and then dried. After that the dried manure was grinded and then applied to the land. Broiler dropping, layer dropping and goat dropping put under soil in anaerobic condition for 21 days and then applied to the land. Goat dropping was broken down manually. During land preparation organic manure was applied @ of 30 kg/decimal and Phosphate (TSP) and MP was applied @ 150 and 125 kg/ha. Urea at the rate of 50 kg was applied 20-30 days after transplanting. Chemical analysis of samples: The samples were analyzed for DM (Dry matter), CP (Crude protein) and Ash following the method of AOAC (2004). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were determined by following the procedures of Georing and Van soest (1970). Statistical Analysis: The collected data were statistically analyzed using “Analysis of Variance” technique with the help of computer program, SAS. The significance of mean differences among the treatments was done by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) and Least Significant Difference (LSD) Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The different manure showed variation for nutrient content, biomass yield, no. of hill, no. of tiller and the plant height. It is revealed that the Napier grasses treated with layer manure had the highest result in terms of growth. This could be due to the high level of mineralization of layer manure, compared to the other manure types that had not fully decomposed. It can also be concluded that Napier grass with proper application of organic manure is a good choice for pasture establishment.
