The experiment was conducted to test the adaptability of three alternate cropping patterns viz. i) Maize-Okra-T. Aman ii) Maize-Sesame-T. Aman and iii) Maize-Khira-T. Aman instead of existing cropping pattern (Maize-Fallow-T. Aman) at Sherpur, Bogra, Bangladesh under the supervision of OFRD, Bogra during 2003-04 and funded by NCDP. Maize-Okra-T. Aman cropping pattern showed better performance and Maize-Sesame-T. Aman cropping pattern showed moderate performance in case of all agronomical and economical parameters. Though Maize-Okra-T. Aman cropping pattern showed better performance but farmers did not show interest to grow Okra for some unreasonable problems. So, Maize-Sesame-T. Aman cropping pattern may be recommended for Sherpur, Bogra, Bangladesh along with Maize-Okra-T. Aman cropping pattern instead of Maize-Fallow-T. Aman cropping pattern (local practice).

To test the adaptability with other two possible cropping patterns instead of existing cropping pattern (Maize-Fallow-T. Aman) at Sherpur, Bogra, Bangladesh.

Maize-Okra-T. Aman cropping pattern with two other possible cropping pattern Maize-Sesame-T. Aman and Maize-Khira-T. Aman were tested against farmers existing cropping pattern Maize-Fallow-T. Aman at Sherpur, Bogra, Bangladesh during 2003-04. The treatments (cropping patterns) were as A. Main pattern: i) Maize-OkraT. Aman, B. Other possible patterns: ii) Maize-Sesame-T. Aman and iii) Maize-Khira-T. Aman, and C. Cheek pattern: iv) Maize-Fallow-T. Aman. The land was prepared well and fertilized with 550-250-200-250-10-5 kg/ha Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, ZnSO4 and Boric Acid, respectively. The seed rate was 8 kg/ha and the variety was Pacific-11. The plot size of maize was 1000 m2 and Maize seeds were sown in 4-20 November, 2003 and harvested at 23-31 March, 2004. Four irrigation were applied and all intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Furadan 10G and Darshban were used at the time of final land preparation and seedling stage, respectively. Plot size for the other three next individual crop viz. Okra, Sesame and Khira were 320 m2. The land was prepared well and fertilized with recommended doses of Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum. Seeds were sown of the three crops on 7 to 16 April; 28 March to 6 April, 2004 and 28 March- 6 April, 2004, respectively, and seeds of T. Aman were sown in 6-11 August, 2004. All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Relothrin was used to control external leaf feeder of all crops. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 5 replications. Data on all operations, yield and yield attributes of Maize were recorded timely. Data on all operations and yield of Okra, Sesame and Khira were recorded separately. Cost return analysis was also calculated for all patterns.

Maize-Okra-T. Aman cropping pattern showed better performance and Maize-Sesame-T. Aman cropping pattern showed moderate performance in case of all agronomical and economical parameters. Though Maize-Okra-T. Aman cropping pattern showed better performance, but farmers under study did not show interest to grow Okra for some unreasonable problems. So, Maize-Sesame-T. Aman cropping pattern may also be popularized for Sherpur, Bogura, Bangladesh along with Maize-Okra-T. Aman cropping pattern instead of Maize-Fallow-T. Aman cropping pattern.
