The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Ishurdi, Pabna during 2008–2009 to find out the effect of rhizobium inoculation on foot and root rot in several lentil varieties. Five lentil varieties, viz. BARI Masur 1, BARI Masur 2, BARI Masur 3, BARI Masur 4 and BARI Masur 5, were planted in main plots and two rhizobium strains, viz. BARI Biofertilizer Rlc 103 and BARI Biofertilizer Rlc 104, and one control (no inoculation) were the treatments in each subplot. BARI Masur 5 inoculated with BARI Biofertilizer Rlc 104 showed minimum (11.2%) incidence of foot and root rot, leading to maximum plant survival (88.8%). The highest number of nodules per plant (18.1) was also recorded in BARI Masur 5 inoculated with BARI Biofertilizer Rlc 104. Consequently, inoculated BARI Masur 5 gave the highest grain yield (1952.9 kg/ha).

To find out the effect of biofertilizer (different rhizobium strains) against foot and root rots in five lentil varieties.

 

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station of the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh, during 2008–2009. The experimental land was well ploughed and leveled. Weeds and stubbles were removed. No chemical fertilizers were applied. The plot size was 4.0 m x 1.0 m and plant spacing 30 cm with continuous sowing. The experiment was conducted in split plot randomized complete block design with three replications. The varieties BARI Masur 1, BARI Masur 2, BARI Masur 3, BARI Masur 4 and BARI Masur 5 were used as main plots and two rhizobium strains developed at BARI (BARI Biofertilizer Rlc 103 and BARI Biofertilizer Rlc 104) and control (no inoculation) were accommodated in subplots. The seeds were inoculated with biofertilizers @ 40 g per kg seed before sowing. The treated seed was sown in furrows in each unit plot at a depth of 3–4 cm in the afternoon on November 11, 2008. The furrows were covered with soil just after sowing. Intercultural operations were done as needed to maintain normal hygienic condition of the crop. The plots were inspected regularly to record the incidence of foot and root rot diseases from seedling stage to crop maturity. Dead plants, if any, were removed from the field. Their diseased parts were used to identify foot and root rot pathogens in the laboratory. The crop was harvested on March 1, 2009.  Data were recorded on foot and root rot, plant survival, number of nodules per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, seed yield per plant, and grain yield per hectare. The data were analyzed statistically to determine the level of significance and variations among the treatments following Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) according to Gomez and Gomez.
