A pot experiment was conducted in the glasshouse of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during 2002– 2003. Six Rhizobium strains and three biofertilizers were used for seed treatment. The variety used was BARI Bushbean 1. Rhizobium strains (BINAR P36 and BINAR P6) and BINA biofertilizer resulted in maximum reduction of seed rot, foot and root rot (Fusarium solani) of bushbean. In addition, there was increased germination, plant stand, shoot length, root length, shoot weight, root weight, vigour index, plant height, number of green pods, weight of green pods, weight of seeds and healthy looking seeds. Among Rhizobium strains, BINAR P36 performed better. So, BINAR P36 may be used for reducing foot and root rot and increasing yield of bushbean.

To investigate  the effect of Rhizobium strains and biofertilizers on foot/root rot disease and yield of bushbean under glasshouse condition.

This study was conducted in glasshouse of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, Bangladesh during 2002–2003. Inoculum of Fusarium solani was prepared following the method of Khan (Haque and Ghaffar, 1995). Soil was mixed uniformly with cow dung (2:1). The dried soil was sterilized with formalin (40%) @ 5 ml formalin diluted with 20 ml of water for 4 kg soil (12, 13). The oat culture of Fusarium solani was then mixed with pot soil @ 0.1 percent weight of dry soil before seed sowing (7, 10, 13, 14). The inoculum was applied only up to a depth of 6 cm in pot soils i.e. 2 g of oat culture was mixed with each pot soil. A total of 50 pots were inoculated with oat culture for five replications. Seeds were counted, weighed and packed in separate polyethylene bags as per treatment and replication. Six Rhizobium strains (BAUR 975, BAUR 424, BARIR 7029, BARIR 892, BINAR P6 and BINAR P36) and three biofertilizers (BAU, BARI and BINA) were used for treating seeds. Seeds were treated with Rhizobium strains and biofertilizers following methods of earlier researchers (8,13,15,16). For seed coating with Rhizobium broth, Rhizobium strains containing 109 Rhizobium cells/ml in Yeast Mannitol broth was taken in sterilized 500 ml Erlenmeyer flasks. The seeds were dipped in broth for 15 minutes. In case of biofertilizers, seeds were initially moistened with molasses @ 50 g per kg seed. Then seeds were thoroughly mixed with biofertilizer (50 g/kg  seed), where each biofertilzer contained 108 Rhizobium cells/mg. In case of control, seeds were not treated with Rhizobium strains or biofertilizers. The inoculant-coated seeds were placed in a cool and dry place under shade for drying. Rhizobium treated seeds and non-treated seeds for control were sown in previously prepared soil in pots. Five seeds were sown in each pot.  Observations were made every day in the morning on foot and root rot diseased plants. Intercultural operations were done to maintain normal hygienic condition of crop growth. No plant protecting chemicals (insecticides or fungicides) were used for controlling the pests and diseases of crop. The data were recorded on germination, seed rot, foot and root rot, plant stand, seedling vigour, number of nodules per plant, length of green pod, breadth of green pod, number of green pods per plant, weight of green pods per plant (g), plant height, number of seeds per pod, weight of seeds per pod (g), weight of seeds per plant, apparently healthy looking seeds and discoloured seeds (%). For vigour index (VI) or seedling vigour, data were recorded on germination up to 15 days of sowing. Five plants were randomly selected and uprooted carefully from pot and washed in tap water. Then root length and shoot length were recorded. Vigour index was calculated by using formula of Baki and Anderson (1973). The data were subjected to statistical analysis for mean values and test of significance. The variations among respective data were compared following least significant difference (LSD) test.

Rhizobium strains (BINAR P36 and BINAR P6) and BINA biofertilizer showed maximum reduction of foot and root rot with higher yield of bushbean in pots. Among them BINAR P36 performed better which may be used for reducing foot and root rot and increasing bushbean yield.
