Urea Super Granule Coupled with Herbicide Application Maximizes Profit by Reducing Labour Requirement in Rice Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This research was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Gazipur Farm during Boro season of 2013-14 to determine the relative profitability of different sources of Nitrogen (PU-prilled urea and USG-urea super granule) and weed control methods (Herbicide: Refit, & Super clean and Hand weeding) in relation to labour utilization for rice cultivation. The treatments were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block design and replicated thrice. BRRI dhan29 was used as test cultivar. All the phenotypic parameters were significantly affected by the interaction effect of N-fertilizers and weed control methods, except 1000-grain weight, grain and straw yield. In PU applied plots, hand weeding produced the highest number of tiller m^-2 and grain panicle^-1, but super clean gave the highest number panicle^-1. Weeding method had no significant effect on grain yield. All the phenotypic parameters were higher in USG applied plots compared to PU applied plots. USG applied plots required higher number of labor (7%) than PU applied plots. Economic analysis showed that application of super clean coupled with USG had the highest gross margin (Tk. 140421 ha^-1) followed by super clean+ PU application (Tk. 133699 ha^-1).

Objectives:

To determine the effect of sources of nitrogen and methods of weed control in transplanted rice in respect to labour utilization.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI farm, Gazipur during Boro' 2013-14 season. The experimental field was situated at 230 59´33´´ N and 900 24´19´´ E at an elevation of 8.4 m from the mean sea level, and is characterized by sub-tropical climate. The soil of the field was clay loam of shallow brown terrace under Madhupur tract (AEZ 28), the experimental field classified as a Chhiata clay loam, hyperthermic Vertic Endoaquept. The treatments were different sources of Nitrogen ( PU= applied in 3 equal splits; and USG= applied at 15 DAT + PU at 45 DAT ) and weed control methods (W₁= herbicide- Refit+ Hand weeding at 45 DAT; W₂= herbicide- super clean + hand weeding at 45 DAT; and W₃= hand weeding at 15, 30 and 45 DAT) and arranged in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. BRRI dhan29 was used as planting material. The unit plot size was 10 m ×10 m. Fertilizer TSP, MOP, Gypsum and zinc sulphate were added as basal. Data on yield and yield components were recorded at maturity. Economic analysis was done to determine the efficiency of different treatments following the procedure of Marginal Rate of Return (MRR) by CIMMYT (1988). Collected data were analyzed by following a standard statistical procedure (Crop Stat) and the mean differences were adjusted by LSD method.

The findings of this study indicated that urea super granule application coupled with weed control using super clean herbicide maximizes profit by reducing the number of labor requirement in boro rice cultivation.
