Study on Price Variation and Cost Benefit Ratio of Different Flowers Produced in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present experiment was carried out at the flower market Agargaon, Shahbag and other retail shops at Dhaka, and different flower growing areas of Bangladesh during June 2015 to May 2016 to investigate the present scenario of flower business in Bangladesh. Data were collected from different wholesalers, retailers and farmers. The results indicated that the various kinds of flower are produced in different parts of the country. There are a lot of flower markets and shops available in Dhaka city. The price of different flowers was varied in different days of the week, different month of the year and different special days of the year. The cost of production was varied in different kinds of flower. Though there were a lot of flowers are produced, there were some problems prevail in flower production in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

Considering all the above mentioned conditions of cut flower the main objectives of the study were: 1. To know the price variation among different flowers. 2. To know the price variation of flower in different times of the year. 3. To know the cost benefit ratio of different flowers produced in Bangladesh. 4. To know the present status of cut flower business in Bangladesh

Methodology:

The present experiment was carried out to investigate the present scenario of flower business in Bangladesh. Data were collected from different wholesalers, retailers and farmers from Central Flower Market Agargaon, Shahbag, different flower shops at Dhaka and different flower growing areas of Bangladesh. All data were collected from 20 wholesalers and 20 farmers who come to sell their own produced flower. Thus total sample size was 40. The study was based on the survey method of data collection. According to the objectives of the study two sets of interview schedules were prepared of which one for the wholesalers and one for the farmers. During data collection the objectives of the study were clearly explained to the respondents. Majority of the study is based on primary data. The primary data for the present study from the selected respondents were collected through direct face to face interview. A detail questionnaire was formulated for collecting data. The questionnaire is distributed among randomly chosen respondent. Primary data were collected by direct interview to the targeted respondents. Among the wholesalers present in the market, 10 wholesalers were randomly selected from Agargaon and 10 were selected from Shahbag flower market. On the other hand, among the farmers present in the market, 10 farmers were randomly selected from Agargaon and 10 were selected from Shahbag flower market. Some secondary data were used in this study. Secondary data were collected from books, published documents, survey reports, online journals and articles. The recorded data on different parameters were statistically analyzed. The analysis was done with both quantitative and qualitative procedure. MS-Excel was used as the software for quantitative analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Various kinds of flowers are produced in different parts of Bangladesh. The demand for cut-flowers is increasing in the world day by day. But the demand and price of different flowers are fluctuated. The price of different flowers is varied in different days of the week, different month of the year and different special days of the year. The cost of production is varied indifferent kinds of flower. Though there is a favorable environment for flower production, there are some problems are present in flower production in Bangladesh, such as sub standard quality of seed, inadequate and low financial investments, insufficient incentives and support from the government, and non availability of trained and qualified manpower. For increasing the quantity and quality of flower government should take necessary steps to overcome these problems.
