An investigation was carried out to assess drinking water quality parameters like pH, total dissolved solids, iron (Fe), arsenic (As) and chloride at Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) Campus. As this university is expanding its academic activities and establishments, it is necessary to ensure the quality of drinking water for the dwellers to continue their academic and research activities smoothly. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water in this university. The water samples were collected from the tube well and reserved tank at 5 different locations in April, 2016 covering student hall and academic establishment. The concentration of pH, TDS, Fe and Cl varied 6.8-7.04, 100-440 mgl-1, 0.5-1.2 mgl-1 and 15-20 mgl-1, respectively. The concentration of as was 0 mgl-1 for all water samples. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) standard and Bangladesh Standard (BD) of drinking water pH, TS, TDS, as and Cl toxicity were not detected. Iron concentration of main pump water sample exceeded Bangladesh standard and WHO standard and for this an aeration tank was recommended for the treatment of water before supply. Analysis of arsenic revealed that there is no arsenic contamination in groundwater at this campus.

1) To assess the chemical properties (pH and TDS) in groundwater at Sylhet Agricultural University campus; and 2) To measure the concentration of heavy metal like As, Fe and Cl in groundwater at this campus area.

The study was conducted in April 2016 at the Department of Agricultural Construction and Environmental Engineering, Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), Sylhet and at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet.There are 10 tubewells (1 DTWw and 9 STW) in Sylhet Agricultural University located at different places. At first 5 pumps were selected including Main pump, Humayun Rashid Chowdhury Hall (HRC) pump, Shah S. M. A.S. Kibria Hall pump, New library building pump and Teacher’s dormitory reserve tank. Then water samples were collected using 500 ml plastic bottles. Before collecting samples, the bottle was washed with distilled water then dried. Bottles with collected samples were sealed immediately to avoid exposure to air. To provide necessary information for each sample such as date of collection, location, source of water, etc. was recorded in note book and each sample collected in bottle was leveled separately with a unique identification number. Chemical parameters like pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride, iron and arsenic of the collected sample water were tested in the laboratory. The pH was measured by digital pH meter (HANNA, HI 8014). Total dissolved solids (TDS) were determined according to standard method of ASTM D 5907 (ASTM, 2004). Chloride was determined in Mohr’s method by titration with a standard silver nitrate solution in the presence of potassium chromate indicator. Iron was determined by the production of red colored iron compound (ferric thiocyanate), by adding of potassium thiocyanate. The Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer was used for detection of the amount of color change. Arsenic concentration in the water sample was determined by silver diethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC).

The study revealed that the drinking water of Sylhet Agricultural University campus contained the acceptable amount of pH, TDS, As, Cl and Fe. In case of the main pump iron concentration exceeded the recommended limit for drinking water and measures should be taken to treat this water sample in an aeration tank to remove irons before supply. Without evaluation of seasonal variation of heavy metal (such as Fe, As, Cl) contamination, it is difficult to predict the actual amount of these trace elements in the water sample. So, the future studies should include the seasonal variation of trace elements in groundwater of the study area. In addition to chemical quality, biological and radiological tests of waters should be taken into consideration. The future research programs should be taken to find out the more information about the drinking water quality of the study area.
