Of Seeded Banana Germplasm at Jamalpur Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out for fruit characteristics of seeded banana (Musa acuminata) at the Horticulture Research Centre, RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during 2018 to 2019. Eight local viz. SB-01, SB-02, SB-03, SB-04, SB-06, SB-09, SB-10 & SB-13 and two exotic viz. SB-ISD-01 and SB-ISD-05 genotypes were included in the study. Significant differences were observed among all the local and exotic lines in respect of all vegetative growth, flowering characters, harvesting time , yield and yield contributing characters and post-harvest quality of seeded banana. The line SB-10 produced the tallest plant (4.58 m) and SB-13 the shortest plant (3.31 m). Base girth and number of leaves were found the maximum in SB-01 (65.17 cm) and SB-09 (8.17), respectively. The line SB-02 exhibited the highest bunch weight (19.07 kg) and number of hands per bunch (11). The highest average weight of individual hand (2.26 kg) was found in SB-01. The length and breadth of bunch were noted the maximum in the line SB-01 and SB-10 (62.00 cm and 40.22 cm respectively). Number of fingers per hand was noted the highest in SB-02 (15). SB-10 exhibited the biggest finger (199.87 g) as against the smallest finger in SB-02 (122.96 g). The line SB-02 gave the maximum yield (43.88 t/ha) while SB-09 exhibited the minimum yield (25.05 t/ha).

Objectives:

. In view of this fact, the present study has been undertaken in order to evaluate the yield potential and fruit characters of the local and exotic lines of seeded banana under Jamalpur condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Research Centre, RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during the period from January 2018 to April 2019. Eight local germplasm viz. SB-01, SB-02, SB-03, SB-04, SB-06, SB-09, SB-10, SB-13 and two exotic germplasm viz. SB-ISD-01 and SB-ISD-05 were included in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. One sucker per plant of second year crop was allowed to grow before maturity of the 2^nd year crop. The plant debris of main crop was properly cleaned and the unit bed was prepared by raising soil to the bed. Unit plot size was 4 x 4 m accommodating four plants. The ratoon suckers were trimmed in the plot at a spacing of 2 x 2 m on January 2016. Fertilizers were applied @ cowdung 10 kg, TSP 150 g, gypsum 100 g, MOP 100 g, Boron 10 g, ZnSO4 10 g and MgSO4 10.00 g per plant after trimming the suckers. Urea and MOP were applied @ 875 and 850 g per plant in five equal installments starting from two months after retaining second ratoon crop at 45 days interval. Weeding is done at the early stage of growth and four time weeding were done by spading . Desuckering is done up to panicle initiations. Male buds were removed immediately after opening of flowers. Irrigation was done during dry period from November to May at one month interval. A fungicide knowin was sprayed @ 2g/L to control Sigatoka and leaf sopt disease of banana. Vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and the data were statistically analyzed following a programme Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR) and means were separated by DMRT .

Achievement/Findings:

The germplasm SB-02 gave the maximum yield (43.88 t/ha), while SB-09 exhibited the minimum yield (25.05 t/ha). SB-10 exhibited the highest edible portion (85.01%) as compared to lowest in SB-01 (73.51%). SB-03 noted the highest TSS (20%) content as compared to the lowest (statistically similar) TSS (16 %) in SB-02,SB-10 and SB-13, respectively. SB-04 exhibited the highest shelf life (9 days) as compared to the lowest shelf in SB-01 (5 days). Number of seeds per finger ranged from 6 to 335 where, SB-01 noted the highest and SB-06 noted the lowest.

The germplasm; SB-02, SB-01, SB-06, SB-04 and SB-03 gave the higher yield. Considering number of seed per finger, hardness of seed, edible portion, TSS content and shelf life SB-06 and SB-10 were found promisingand SB-06 was the best one under Jamalpur condition.
