Regional Yield Trial of Banana Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six local and exotic table banana lines were evaluated to identify the suitable line at the Horticulture Research Centre, RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during 2018 to 2019.There were significant variations among the lines in terms of all vegetative growth, flowering characters , harvesting time , yield and yield contributing characters and post harvest quality of banana. The highest number of hands per bunch was recorded in line ITC-1441 (11) and the least in Kabri (7.22). ITC-1441 got the highest number of fingers per hand (16.17) whereas Kabri got the lowest (12.34). ITC-1320 produced the highest fruit yield (41.14 t/ha) whereas, Kabri produced the lowest yield (16.35 t/ha). Kabri exhibited the highest edible portion (82.52%) as compared to lowest in ITC-1441 (72.66). The highest TSS (21%) was found in Kabri closely followed by ITC-1441 and Dud Sagar (21.00 and 20.00 %), respectively whereas; BARI Kola-1 produced the lowest TSS (18.11%). Dud Sagar exhibited the highest shelf life (7days) as compared to the lowest shelf in ITC-1320 (3 days).

Objectives:

The study has been undertaken to find out the regional adaptability of those germplasm/lines along with the released variety

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Research Centre, RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during the period from January 2018 to April 2019. Six local and exotic lines were included in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. One sucker per plant of second year crop was allowed to grow before maturity of the 2^nd year crop. The plant debris of main crop was properly cleaned and the unit bed was prepared by raising soil to the bed. Unit plot size was 4 x 4 m accommodating four plants. The ratoon suckers were trimmed in the plot at a spacing of 2 x 2 m on January 2016. Fertilizers were applied @ cowdung 10 kg, TSP 150 g, gypsum 100 g, MOP 100 g, Boron 10 g, ZnSO₄ 10 g and MgSO₄ 10 g per plant after trimming the suckers. Urea and MOP were applied @ 875 and 850 g per plant in five equal installments starting from two months after retaining 1^st ratoon crop at 45 days interval. Weeding, desuckering and propping were done as and when necessary. Male buds were removed immediately after opening of flowers. Irrigation was done during dry period from November to May at one month interval. A fungicide knowin was sprayed @ 2 g/l to control Sigatoka leaf spot disease of banana. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and measured characters were statistically analyzed following a programme Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR) and means were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest number of hands per bunch was recorded in ITC-1441 (11.01) and the least in Kabri (7.22). Individual hand weight was maximum in Dud Sagor (1.35 kg) and minimum in Kabri (0.74 kg). ITC-1441 got the highest number of fingers per hand (16) whereas; Kabri got the lowest fingers (12). Finger length ranged from 9.27 to 13.27 cm, where Kabri attained the lowest and Dud Sagar recorded the highest fruit length. Finger diameter was found to be maximum in Dud Sagar (4.17cm) as against minimum in ITC-1320 (3.14 cm). Maximum individual finger weight (121 g) was recorded in Dud Sagor and minimum (67 g) in ITC-1441. Skin weight of individual finger ranged from 11.92 to 24.35 g. ITC-1320 produced the highest fruit yield (41.14 t/ha) and Kabri produced the lowest yield (16.35 t/ha). Kabri exhibited the highest edible portion (82.52%) as compared to lowest in ITC-1441 (72.66%). The highest TSS (21%) was found in Kabri and ITC-1441 whereas, BARI Kola-1 produced the lowest TSS (18 %). Dud Sagar exhibited the highest shelf life (7 days) as compared to the lowest shelf in ITC-1320 (3 days).

It may be concluded that the lines ITC-1320, ITC-1441 and Dud Sagar performed better in terms of yield. Although ITC-1320 is the highest yielder but its texture becomes soften and fingers detached from its hand easily during ripening period. Considering qualitative characters, Dud Sagar, ITC-1441 and ITC-570 were found as promising lines.
