An experiment was undertaken to screen ten promising brinjal genotypes namely BARI Begun-1, BARI Begun-6, BARI Begun-8, BARI Begun-9, BARI Begun-10, BARI F1Begun-4, Metal Hybrid F1 Begun, Getco Hybrid F1 Begun, local genotypes Singnath and Green ball against Brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) and to observe their relative level of tolerance and yield performance under natural field conditions in winter (September 2014 to March 2015). The highest fruit yield of 33.32 t ha-1 was harvested from BARI Begun-1 and the lowest 15.63 t ha-1 was obtained from Green ball. The highest and the lowest shoot infestation 17.30% and 7.74% were recorded in BARI Begun-8 and BARI Begun-6, respectively. The lowest fruit infestation by number and weight (20.00% and 18.07%) was found in BARI Begun-1 and the highest fruit infestation by number and weight (42.94% and 42.90%) was observed in BARI Begun-8. Varietal tolerance of brinjal against BSFB indicated significant variations among tested genotypes. The BARI Begun-1 showed the moderate level of tolerance and BARI Begun-8 found to be highly susceptible to BSFB.

The present study was undertaken to screen ten promising brinjal genotypes against BSFB and to evaluate their yield performance under natural field condition in winter.

Collection of brinjal genotypes: Seeds of ten brinjal genotypes namely BARI Begun-1, BARI Begun-6, BARI Begun-8, BARI Begun-9, BARI Begun-10 and BARI F1 Begun-4 collected from BARI, Gazipur, Metal Hybrid F1 Begun and Getco Hybrid F1 Begun from Metal Seed Ltd., and Getco Company Ltd., Dhaka, Singnath and Green ballgenotypes were collected from Local market. Experimental Site and Design: The experiment was conducted in the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during winter season, September 2014 to March 2015. It was arranged in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications.The unit plot size was3 m × 3 m accommodating 15 pits plot-1. The distance between rows was 1 m and that between plants 60 cm. Every unit plot had 3 rows with 5 plants at each row. Seedling raising and transplantation: Seeds of ten brinjal genotypes were sown in the individual small nursery seed bed (3m × 1m) at BSMRAU Entomology field on 15 September 2014. The plots were lightly irrigated regularly for ensuring proper germination and growth of the seedlings. Thirty five-days old seedlings were transplanted randomly in the experimental plots within each block. A total of 450 seedlings were plantedin 30 plots @ 15 seedlings plot-1. All the recommended agronomic practices were adopted during the experiment according to Rashid (1993). Collection and analysis of data: Data on different parameters related to BSFB infestation, plant growth, yield attributes and fruit yield were recorded. Total number of shoots and the number of infested shoots were recorded from 5 plants selected randomly from each plot before flowering, after flowering to fruit initiation and at fruiting stages at 7 days interval during the period September 2014 to March 2015. At each harvest data on number of healthy and infested fruits and their weight plot-1were recorded at 7 days interval. The infestation of the pest was expressed in percentage based on total number of shoot and fruit number (number/number) and weight (weight/weight) of fruit and the point of view for screening those genotypes were graded from the mean percentages of infestation, using the following grades or scale (Subbaratnam and Butani, 1981) for BSFB. Mean number of healthy and infested fruit plot-1 were recorded at 55, 70, 85, 100 and 115 days after transplanting (DAT). The final yield was expressed in t ha-1. All the data collected and computed were analyzed statistically. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of different parameters was done and the means were separated using the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

On the basis of the present results, the genotype BARI Begun-8 was selected for cultivation among the farmers of Bangladesh.
