An experiment was conducted to study the influence of seed rhizome size and spacing on the growth and yield of ginger to determine the optimum rhizome size and optimum plant spacing. The experiment was conducted at the Spices Research Center, BARI, Bogura, Bangladesh during 2011-2012.The experiment consisted of four different seed rhizome sizes viz., small S1 (30g), medium S2 (35g), large S3 (40g) and very large S4 (45g) as the first and four plant spacing D1 (20 × 25 cm), D2 (30 × 25 cm), D3 (40 × 25 cm) and D4 (50 × 25 cm) as the second factor. An increase in seed rhizome size significantly increased the major growth and yield component of ginger. Large seed rhizome 45g had significantly higher rhizome yield (19.35 t/ha) than the other treatments. Among the spacing treatments closer spacing D1 (20 × 25 cm) significantly increased the growth and yield component parameters. Closer spacing D1 (20 × 25 cm) significantly gave higher rhizome yield (20.81 t/ha) than the other treatments. The combined effect of S4D1 treatment large rhizome S4 (45g) with closer spacing D1 (20 × 25 cm) produced the highest rhizome yield (22.25 t ha-1).

To find out the optimum seed rhizome size and optimum plant spacing required for planting without adversely affecting the yield and profit.

The experiment was undertaken in the farm of the Spices Research Centre, BARI, Bogura, during the period from April 2011 to January 2012. It has sub-tropical climate with an average annual rainfall of 237.13 mm. The soil is Tista polal tract, having a pH of 5.8-6.6. The field experiment was laid out in a Randomize Complete Block Design using four different sizes of rhizome and four spacing with three replications. Each plot measuring 4.0m long and 1.5m broad was prepared for each treatment. Healthy ginger rhizome BARI Ada -1 variety was used for planting material. Four rhizome sizes viz. small S1 (30g), medium S2 (35g), large S3 (40g) and very large S4 (45g) constituted as the first and four plant spacing D1 (20 × 25 cm), D2 (30 × 25 cm), D3 (40 × 25 cm) and D4 (50 × 25 cm) as the second factor. The seed rhizome of ginger was planted at 1st April, 2011. A uniform application of Cowdung , Urea, TSP, MOP and Gypsum at 5 ton, 304, 267, 233 and 111 kg ha-1 respectively was also made to all the experiment area and other cultural operations was given according to the requirements of the crop. Total cowdung was applied at the time of general land preparation and the entire quantity of TSP, Gypsum and half of MOP was applied during final land preparation. The half of the Urea was applied 50 days after planting and the remaining MOP and Urea was applied in two equal splits at 80 and 110 days after planting. Earthing up was done at 60, 90 and 110 days after planting. The crop was grown under rainfed condition, because farmers are generally ginger produced without irrigation. The data on different growth parameters was recorded from 10 selected plants randomly each plot 15 days’ interval at 50, 65, 80, 110, 125, 140 and 155 days after planting. Yield and yield contributing characters was collected at harvesting time. The collected data was analyzed statistically and adjusted with least significance (LSD) at 5% and 1% level of probability.

The study concluded that the rhizome yield of ginger was significantly affected by the rhizome size, spacing and their combined effects. The growth and yield attributes of ginger yield were increased when use large seed rhizome (45g). Spacing also influenced the growth and yield of ginger rhizome yield. The closest plant spacing (20 × 25 cm) is the highest yield of ginger rhizome. However, very large rhizome (45g) with closest plant spacing (20 × 25 cm) is the best for ginger production under Bangladesh condition.
