Effect of Indol-3-acetic Acid and Phosphorus on Growth and Yield of French Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November 2008 to March 2009 to investigate the effect of IAA and phosphorus on the growth and yield of French bean. The experiment consisted of two factors, one factor is three levels of lAA and other factor is four levels of phosphorus. BARI Zhar Shcem-1 was used as a test crop. Application of IAA and phosphorus at different levels had positive impact on growth, yield and yield components of French bean. The highest (17.59 t/ha) green pod yield of French bean was observed in 30 ppm IAA application and the lowest (12.50 t/ha) was obtained from control treatment. On the other hand, the highest (18.16 t/ha) green pod yield was recorded from 130 kg P₂O₅ t/ha application and the lowest (12.63 t/ha) was obtained from control treatment. The highest green pod yield (18.97 t/ha) was obtained from the combination of 30 ppm IAA and 130 kg P₂O₅ t/ha application plot and the lowest (10.00 t/ha) was in control condition. The maximum (3.65) benefit cost ratio was obtained due to application of 30 ppm IAA and 130 kg P₂O₅ t/ha, while the lowest (2.07) in control condition. Therefore, the best results were obtained from 30 ppm IAA and combination with 130 P₂O₅ t/ha.

Objectives:

Determine the sole IAA concentration and different level of phosphorus or combination of IAA and phosphorus for increasing growth parameters as well as yield of French bean

Methodology:

The research work was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November 2008 to March 2009. The variety of French bean was “BARI Zhar Shcem-1”. The seeds were collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur. The experiment was consisted of two factors. one factor is three levels of lAA, viz. I₀ = No IAA, I₁ = 20 ppm IAA and I₂ = 30 ppm IAA, and other factor is four levels of phosphorus, viz., P₀ = 0 kg P₂O₅/ha, P₁ = 110 kg P₂O₅/ha_,P₂ = 120 kg P₂O₅/ha, P₃ = 130 kg P₂O₅/ha. The experiment was laid out RCBD design with three replications. Unit plot size was 2.0m x 1.5m. Ten t/ha cowdung, Urea-55kh/ha, TSP as per treatment and MOP-150 kg/ha were applied. IAA was applied as per treatment at 21, 25, 29, 33 days after sowing. The seed were sown on 22 November, 2009 in each hill at a depth of 3.0 cm which were treated with Bavistin to protect from seed born diseases. The spacing was 30cm x15cm. The seeds were covered with loose soil just after sowing and gently pressed with hands. When the plants were well established, one healthy plant per hill was allowed to grow by thinning. Weeding was done three time at 15, 25 and 35 DAS. Irrigation was done as per requirement of the experiment plot. The young plants were irrigated four times at an interval of 10 days by watering cane. Green pod were harvested three times at tender stage through hand picking and weight of pods per plant, percent dry matter content of pod and yield of green pod per hectare, respectively. The recorded data were analyze, and mean values were adjusted and separated by DMRT according to Gomez and Gomez (1984). Economic analyses were used in order to find out the most profitable treatment combination and calculation was also used in details.

Achievement/Findings:

Application of IAA and phosphorus at different levels had positive on growth, yield and yield components of French bean. It was also found that the economic benefit also higher in relation to cereal crops. Therefore, application of 30 ppm IAA and 130 kg P₂O₅ t/ha may be recommended for higher yield of green pod of French bean.
