Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Exploration and collection programme was conducted on mango (Mangifera indica) germplasm in 2 upazilas of 2 districts in Bangladesh during 2018-2019. Twelve germplasm of mango were collected from 2 upazilas of Jamalpur and Mymensingh districts. The germplasm were collected from farmers’ field, orchad, home garden and park etc. The status of the sample was landraces. The samples were collected as seedlings, fruits and suckers from individual plant or population. Passport data like crop name, collector’s number, local or cultivar name, sample status and source, date of collection, name of village, union, upazila and district were recorded.

Objectives:

Local cultivars still available in less accessible areas are also in the verge of extinction. With a view to collect and conserve the available diversity, “Collection, characterization and promotion of mango has been proposed

Methodology:

The expedition was made for collection of mango germplasm from 2 districts of Bangladesh. The team was equipped with plastic carton, GPS, compass, digital camera, hand lens, envelop, knife, scissors, drying sheet, pencil, stapler etc. Germplasm of target crops were collected from farmers’ field, orchad, home garden and park etc. Collector’s number and date were recorded during collection. Name of crop species along with English, Bangla, local and cultivar name were recorded. Name of donor with ethnic group, village, union, upazila, district, latitude and longitude were noted.

Achievement/Findings:

Twelve mango germplasm from 2 districts of Bangladesh were collected. Several offseason mango germplasm are collected . District wise collection status of target crops including number of upazilas explored per district. Detail passport data of individual germplasm viz. Collector’s number, cultivar/local name, sample status, sample source, date of collection, name village, upazilla and district were recorded during collection. The collected germplasm are conserved in the field. Exploration and collection need to continue other areas to capture maximum diversity
