Evaluation of Ash Gourd Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Horticulture Research Centre, Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Jamalpur during the summer season of 2018 to develop new high yielding OP variety. Five collected ash gourd (Benincasa hispida) lines viz. BH Jam-001, BH Jam-002, BH Jam-003, BH Jam-004, BH Jam-005 and BARI Chalkumra-1 as check were evaluated. The line BH-Jam-005 and BH-Jam-002 took the minimum days (83) to 1^stharvest followed by BH-Jam-004 (85) and BARI Chalkumra-1(85) while the line BH-Jam-003(88) took the maximum days. The maximum number of marketable fruits (11) per plant was recorded from BH-Jam-005 followed by the BARI Chalkumra-1(10.40) and the minimum number of fruits (5.20) was observed in BH-Jam-004. The highest yield was obtained from BH-Jam-005 (43.31 t/ha) followed by BARI Chalkumra-1 (38.77 t/ha), while the line BH-Jam-004 produced the lowest yield (20.89 t/ha).

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the selected lines in order to develop a new variety of ash gourd.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at HRC, RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during the summer season of 2018. Five collected ash gourd lines viz. BH Jam-001, BH Jam-002, BH Jam-003, BH Jam-004, BH Jam-005 and BARI Chalkumra-1 as check were included in this study. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Seeds were sown on March 10, 2018 and 30 days old seedlings were transplanted in the field at a spacing of 2.0 × 1.5 m. The unit plot size was 7.5 × 2.0 m. The plants were fertilized with 20 ton cowdung, 175 kg urea, 175 kg TSP, 150 kg MP, 100 kg gypsum, 12 kg zinc oxide and 10 kg borax/ha. Half of the cowdung was applied during land preparation. The remaining half of cowdung, the entire amount of TSP, gypsum, zinc oxide, borax and 1/3 each of urea and MP were applied during bed and pit preparation. Rest of urea and MP were applied in 2 equal installments at 15 and 30 days after seedling transplantation. Selected plants were selfed. Trellis used and irrigation, pruning and other cultural operations were done as and when required. Data on flowering, fruit yield and fruit characteristics were recorded and analyzed statistically using statistical software STAR which was developed by IRRI.

Achievement/Findings:

The yield and yield contributing characters of the lines of ash gourd were recorded. Most of the parameters were significantly differed except days to first male flower open, node order of male flower open, days to first harvest, fruit length and fruit breadth. Days to first fruit harvesting ranged from 83-88 days. The highest number of fruits per plant was obtained from the line BH-Jam-005 (11) while the lowest in BH-Jam-004 (5).The highest yield per plant was recorded in BH-Jam-005 (12.99 kg) while the lowest in BH-Jam-004 (6.27 kg). The highest yield per hectare was observed in BH-Jam-005 (43.31 t) followed by BARI Chalkumra-1 (38.77 t), BH-Jam-001 (30.34 t) and the lowest yield in BH-Jam-004 (20.89 t). Considering yield and yield contributing characters the germplasm BH Jam-005, BH Jam-00, BH Jam-002 and BH Jam-003 gave better performance. So, these germplasm may be selected for PYT in next year.
