Evaluation of Eggplant Lines for Winter at Jamalpur Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the research field of Horticulture Research Centre, Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Jamalpur during the winter season of 2018-2019to develop new high yielding OP variety. Twelve collected eggplant lines viz.SM Jam-003, SM Jam-004, SM Jam-005, SM Jam-008, SM Jam-009, SM Jam-010, SM Jam-011, SM Jam-013, SM Jam-014, SM Jam-015, SM Jam-017 and SM Jam-024 were evaluated at RARS, Jamalpur. The line SM Jam-004, SM-Jam-005 and SM Jam-013 took the minimum days (100) to 1^st harvest followed by SM Jam-003(113) and SM Jam-008(113) while the line SM Jam-009 (138) took the maximum days. The highest average fruit weight was obtained from SM Jam-015 (311.2 g) and the lowest was from SM Jam-014 (28.8 g).The longest fruit was recorded from SM Jam-024 (15.70cm) and the shortest was from SM Jam-013 (9.60 cm). The highest (124) number of fruits per plant was noted from the line SM Jam-009 and the lowest (12) number of fruits per plant was noted from the line SM Jam-015. Maximum yield (41.22 t/ha) was produced by the line SM Jam-015 and minimum yield (20.40 t/ha) was produced by the line SM Jam-014.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the selected lines in order to develop a new variety of eggplant.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RARS, Jamalpur during the winter season of 2018-2019. Twelve open pollinated eggplant germplasm viz. SM Jam-003, SM Jam-004, SM Jam-005, SM Jam-008, SM Jam-009, SM Jam-010, SM Jam-011, SM Jam-013, SM Jam-014, SM Jam-015, SM Jam-017 and SM Jam-024 were evaluated. The experiment was laid out in non-replicated design. The unit plot size was 7.0 m × 0.70 m. Seedlings were transplanted to the main field on 25 October 2018 with a spacing of 0.70 m × 0.70 m. Manure and fertilizers were applied at the rate of cowdung 10 t/ha, urea 375 kg/ha, TSP 150 kg/ha and MOP 250 kg/ha. Half quantity of cowdung was applied during final land preparation. The remaining half of the cowdung, the entire amount of TSP and one third each of urea and MOP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of urea and MOP were applied in two equal installments at 21 and 35 days after transplanting. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on days to 50% flowering, days to 1^st harvest, number of fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit breadth and yield per plant and per hectare. The data were analyzed statistically to assess the result.

SM Jam 009 required the maximum (103) days and SM Jam 017 required the minimum (71) days for 50% flower. Days to 1^st harvest ranged from 100 to 138 days. The highest (124) number of fruits per plant was counted from the line SM Jam-009 and the lowest (12) number of fruits from SM Jam-015.The longest fruit was recorded from SM Jam-024 (15.70cm) and the shortest was from SM Jam-013 (9.60 cm). The heaviest fruit was found in SM Jam-015 and the smallest fruit was observed in SM Jam-014. Maximum yield (41.22 t/ha) was produced by the line SM Jam-015 and minimum yield (20.40 t/ha) was produced by SM Jam-014. The lines SM Jam-015, SM Jam-017, SM Jam-004, SM Jam-003 and SM Jam-011 can be selected for regional yield trial.
