Evaluation of Bottle Gourd Lines in Summer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to evaluate bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) line in respect of yield and quality in summer at HRC field, RARS, Jamalpur during the kharif-1 season of 2018 in order to release a new summer bottle gourd variety. Seven bottle gourd lines viz. LS Jam-001, LS Jam-002, LS Jam-003, LS Jam-004, LS Jam-005, LS Jam-006, LS Jam-007 and BARI Lau-4 as check were evaluated to investigate the yield and yield contributing characters. Longer fruit (41 cm) was obtained from BARI Lau-4 whereas shorter fruit (11 cm) by LS Jam-002. LS Jam-006 produced wider fruit (21 cm) compared to narrower fruit (12 cm) . The highest number of fruits per plant (12) was produced by the LS Jam-004 whereas the lowest number of fruits (8) was noted from the LS Jam-005. The higher individual fruit weight (1.51 kg) noted in LS Jam-005 and lower (1.15 kg) in LS Jam-003. The more fruit yield per plant (16.55 kg), per plot (82.77 kg) & per hectare (27.59 t) was produced by the LS Jam-004 as against the less 10.49 kg per plant , 52.47 kg/plot & 17.49 t per hectare in LS Jam-007.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to observe bottle gourd lines in respect of yield and quality in summer

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at HRC field, RARS, Jamalpur during the kharif-1 season of 2018. Seven bottle gourd lines viz. LS Jam-001, LS Jam-002, LS Jam-003, LS Jam-004, LS Jam-005, LS Jam-006, LS Jam-007 and BARI Lau-4 as check were included in this trial. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD design with three replications. The plot size was 10 m×2.5 m with a planting space of 2.5 m ×2.0 m. Twenty six days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on 24 April, 2018. Each plot contained 5 plants. Manures and fertilizers were applied at the rate of cowdung 20 t/ha, Urea 175 kg/ha, TSP 175 kg/ha, MP 150 kg/ha, Gypsum 100 kg/ha, Zinc 12kg/ha and Borax 10 kg/ha. During land preparation 5 t/ha cowdung, 85kg/ha TSP, 50 kg/ha MP, 100 kg/ha Gypsum, 12 kg/ha Zn and 10 kg/ha Borax were applied. Ten kg cowdung, 60g TSP, and 40g MP per pit were applied at 8-10 days prior to seedling transplanting. Twenty seven g MP and 33g urea per pit were applied at 15 DAT. Thirty three gram urea per pit were applied as top dressing in three equal installments at 30, 50 and 70 DAT. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on days to 1^st female flowering, days to 1^st harvest, days to last harvest, number of fruits per plant, fruit length and diameter, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield per plot and per hectare. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and measured characters were statistically analyzed following a programme Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR).

Achievement/Findings:

All of the traits showed significant difference except days to first female flower. Days to first female flower ranged from 68.00 to 73.00 days. Days to harvest varied from 84 to 129 days. Longer fruit (41 cm) was obtained from BARI Lau-4 whereas shorter fruit (11 cm) by LS Jam-002. LS Jam-006 produced wider fruit (21 cm) compared to narrower fruit (12 cm) . The highest number of fruits per plant (12) was produced by the LS Jam-004 whereas the lowest number of fruits (8) was noted from the LS Jam-005. The higher individual fruit weight (1.51 kg) noted in LS Jam-005 and lower (1.15 kg) in LS Jam-003. The more fruit yield per plant (16.55 kg), per plot (82.77 kg) & per hectare (27.59 t) was produced by the LS Jam-004 as against the less 10.49 kg per plant , 52.47 kg/plot & 17.49 t per hectare in LS Jam-007. Fruit fly infestation varied from 2.5 to 3%. For controlling fruit fly infestation we used sex pheromone trap and poison bait.
