Evaluation of Sponge Gourd Lines in Summer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to evaluate sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica) lines in respect of yield and quality at HRC field, RARS, Jamalpur during the summer season of 2018due to release a new sponge gourd variety. Nine sponge gourd lines viz. LC Jam-001, LC Jam -002, LC Jam -003, LC Jam -004, LC Jam -005, LC Jam -006, LC Jam -007, LC Jam -008 and LC Jam -009 were evaluated to investigate the yield and yield contributing characters. The higher number of fruits per plant (89.00) was produced by the line LC Jam-006 whereas the lower number of fruits (27.00) was noted from the LC Jam-005. The higher individual fruit weight (140 g) noted in the line LC Jam-008 and lower (96 g) in the line LC Jam-007. The more fruit yield per plant (11.79 kg) & per hectare (47.15 t) was produced by the line LC Jam-001 and the less 2.97 kg & 11.86 t was found by the line LC Jam-005.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to observe sponge gourd lines in respect of yield and quality in summer

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at HRC field, RARS, Jamalpur during the summer season of 2018. Nine sponge gourd lines viz. LC Jam-001, LC Jam -002, LC Jam -003, LC Jam -004, LC Jam -005, LC Jam -006, LC Jam -007, LC Jam -008 and LC Jam -009 were included in this trial. The experiment was laid out with 3 replications. The plot size was 6.0 m ×2.0 m with a planting space of 2.0m ×2.0 m. Each plot contained 2 plants.Nineteen days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on 28 March, 2018. Manures and fertilizers were applied at the rate of cowdung 20 t/ha, Urea 175 kg/ha, TSP 175 kg/ha, MP 150 kg/ha, Gypsum 100 kg/ha, Zinc 12kg/ha and Borax 10 kg/ha. During land preparation 5 t/ha cowdung, 85kg/ha TSP, 50 kg/ha MP, 100 kg/ha Gypsum, 12 kg/ha Zn and 10 kg/ha Borax were applied. Ten kg cowdung, 60g TSP and 40g MP per pit were applied at 8-10 days prior to seedling transplanting. Twenty seven g MP and 33g urea per pit were applied at 15 DAT. Thirty three gram urea per pit were applied as top dressing in three equal installments at 30, 50 and 70 DAT. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on days to 1^st female flowering, 1^st female node order, days to 1^st harvest, days to last harvest, fruit length and diameter, number of fruits per plant, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield per plot and per hectare. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and measured characters were statistically analyzed following a programme Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR).

Achievement/Findings:

All of the traits showed significant difference except days to 1^st female flowering, fruit length and fruit breadth. Days to first female flower ranged from 42.00 to 47.00 days. Days to harvest ranged from 54 to 172 days. 1^st female node order varied from 14 to 18. Longer fruit (25.27 cm) was obtained from the line LC Jam-009 whereas; shorter fruit (18.63 cm) by the line LC Jam-007. The line LC Jam-009 produced wider fruit (4.19 cm) compared to narrower fruit (3.31 cm) in the line LC Jam-002. The higher number of fruits per plant (89.00) was produced by the line LC Jam-006 whereas; the lower number of fruits (27.00) was noted from the line LC Jam-005.The higher individual fruit weight (140 g) noted in the line LC Jam-008 and lower (96 g) in the line LC Jam-007. The more fruit yield per plant (11.79 kg) & per hectare (47.15 t) was produced by the line LC Jam-001 as against the less 2.97 kg & 11.86 t in the line LC Jam-005 respectively. Fruit fly infestation varied from 3.5 to 6.0 %. For controlling fruit fly infestation we used sex pheromone trap and poison bait.
