Evaluation of Stem Amaranth Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to evaluate stem amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor) lines in respect of yield and quality at HRC field, RARS, Jamalpur during the summer season of 2018 with a view to release a new stem amaranth variety . Seventeen stem amaranth lines viz. AM Jam-001, AM Jam -002, AM Jam -003, AM Jam -004, AM Jam -005, AM Jam -006, AM Jam -007, AM Jam -008, AM Jam -009, AM Jam -0010, AM Jam -0011, AM Jam -0012, AM Jam -0015, AM Jam -0016, AM Jam -0018, AM Jam -0019, AM Jam -0020 and BARI Data-1 as check were evaluated to investigate the yield and yield contributing characters. Days to flowering late (61 days) in the line AM Jam-007 and AM Jam -0018 and early (43) in AM Jam -001. The maximum individual stem weight (342 g) noted in the line AM Jam -003 and minimum (103 g) in the line AM Jam -0015. The highest yield per plot (51.3 kg) and per hectare (34.37 t) was produced by the line AM Jam -003 and second highest yield per plot (50.10 kg) and per hectare (33.57 t) was produced by the line AM Jam -002 as against the less 15.45 kg and 10.35 t was produced by the line AM Jam -0015 respectively.

The present study was undertaken to observe stem amaranth lines in respect of yield and quality in summer

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at HRC field, RARS, Jamalpur during the summer season of 2018-19. Seventeen stem amaranth lines viz. AM Jam-001, AM Jam -002, AM Jam -003, AM Jam -004, AM Jam -005, AM Jam -006, AM Jam -007, AM Jam -008, AM Jam -009, AM Jam -0010, AM Jam -0011, AM Jam -0012, AM Jam -0015, AM Jam -0016, AM Jam -0018, AM Jam -0019, AM Jam -0020 and BARI Data-1 as check were included in this trial. The experiment was laid out without any replication. The plot size was 10 m ×1.0 m with a planting space of 35 cm ×20 cm. Each plot contained 150 plants. Seeds were directly sown in the field on 02 February, 2018. Manures and fertilizers were applied at the rate of cowdung 15 t/ha, Urea 217 kg/ha, TSP 333 kg/ha, MOP 200 kg/ha, Gypsum 111 kg/ha, Zinc 5kg/ha and Borax 8 kg/ha. Total fertilizer except urea and MOP applied during final land preparation. Urea and Mop were applied as top dress in two split. First top dress was applied at 4 leaves stage followed by thinning .Second top dress was done at 21 days after sowing. Other cultural operations such as irrigation the crop at different growth stages, drainage, weeding etc. were done as and when needed. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and measured characters were statistically analyzed following a programme Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR).

Achievement/Findings:

Days to first flower ranged from 43.00 to 61.00 days where minimum in AM Jam-001 and maximum in AM Jam-007 and AM Jam-0018. Days to 50% flower varied from 48.00 to 64.00 days where minimum in AM Jam-001 and maximum in AM Jam-007 and AM Jam-0018. Days to harvest found minimum (41 days) from the line AM Jam-001 and maximum (58 days) from the germplasm AM Jam-007 and AM Jam-0018. The germplasm AM Jam-001 showed maximum plant height (133.8 cm) and minimum (80.4 cm) in AM Jam-001 . No. of leaves/plant was obtained highest (40.8) from AM Jam-0020 and lowest (22.8) from AM Jam-0012 and AM Jam-0015. Leaf length ranged from 21.8 cm to 39 cm and leaf breadth varied from 21.8 cm to 39 cm. Minimum stem length (58.8 cm) was recorded from germplasm AM Jam-0016 and maximum (118 cm) in AM Jam-001. Stem breadth varied from 1.36 cm to 2.6 cm .The maximum individual stem weight (342 g) noted in the line AM Jam -003 and minimum (103 g) in the line AM Jam -0015. The highest yield per plot (51.3 kg) & per hectare (34.37 t) was produced by the line AM Jam -003 and second highest yield per plot (50.10 kg) & per hectare (33.57 t) was produced by the line AM Jam -002 as against the less 15.45 kg & 10.35 t was produced by the line AM Jam -0015 respectively. Less susceptibility of anthracnose disease and also very low aphid infestation observed in all germplasm. The results revealed that the line AM Jam -002. AM Jam -003, AM Jam -005 and AM Jam -0011 gave higher yield and the AM Jam -006, AM Jam -007, AM Jam -0012, AM Jam -0015 and AM Jam -0018 showed longer edible stage which is very important for stem amaranth cultivation. Hence, the study may be continued in the next year for the confirmation of the result.
