Advanced Yield Trial of Selected Hyacinth Bean Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the HRC field, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during 2018-2019 to observe the performance of yield and yield contributing characters of five hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus) germplasm i.e. CB Jam-001, CB Jam-002, CB Jam-003, CB Jam-004 and CB Jam-005 with BARI Sheem-1 & BARI Sheem-6 as check due to release a new hyacinth bean variety. Maximum number of pod per plant (742) was observed from CB Jam-001 and minimum (278) from CB Jam-005. CB Jam-005 gained maximum individual pod weight (14.70 g) whereas minimum observed in CB Jam-003 (7.57 g). Maximum pod yield per plot (26 Kg) and per hectare (21 t) gained from CB Jam-001 and minimum per plot (16 Kg) & per hectare (14 t) obtained from CB Jam-003 and CB Jam-005, respectively.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to observe the performance of yield and yield contributing characters of hyacinth bean germplasm.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken at HRC field, RARS, Jamalpur during 2018-2019. Five hyacinth bean germplasm i.e. CB Jam-001, CB Jam-002, CB Jam-003, CB Jam-004 and CB Jam-005 with BARI Sheem-1 & BARI Sheem-6 as check were planted on 02 October 2018. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The size of a unit plot was 6.0 m x 1.5m with plant spacing of 1.5 m x 1.5 m. Each plot contains 4 plants. Fifteen days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 10 ton cowdung, 60 kg Urea, 200 kg TSP, 150 kg MOP and 120 kg gypsum per hectare. Half of the cowdung was applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cowdung, entire quantity of TSP and half of each of Urea and MOP were applied during final land preparation. The rest of Urea and MOP were applied as top dressing after 30 days of planting. Trellis made with bamboo and bamboo sticks were given for the support of the crop. Irrigation, other intercultural operation (mulching, weeding) and plant protection measures were taken as and when needed. Data on 13 different traits (days to 1st flowering, days to 50% flowering, days to 1st harvest, days to last harvest, number of pods per plant, individual pod weight, pod length, pod breadth, pod yield per plot, pod yield per hectare, insects and diseases reaction) were recorded (Table-1) and measured characters were statistically analyzed following a programme Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR).

Achievement/Findings:

All the growth, yield and yield contributing parameters i.e. days to 1st flowering, days to 50% flowering, number of pods per plant, individual pod weight, pod length, pod breadth, pod yield per plot and pod yield per hectare showed significant variation (Table 1). Days to 1^st flowering varied from 51 to 86 days. Days to 50% flowering ranged from 59 to 95 days. Days to harvest varied from 71 to 215 days. Maximum number of pod per plant (742) was observed from CB Jam-001 and minimum (278) from CB Jam-005. CB Jam-005 gained maximum individual pod weight (14.70 g) whereas minimum observed in CB Jam-003 (7.57 g). Longest pod (20.00 cm) was found from BARI Sheem-6 and shortest pod (8.53 cm) from CB Jam-001. CB Jam-005 produced widest pod (3.83 cm) and narrowest pod (2.08 cm) in CB Jam-003.Maximum pod yield per plot (26.00 Kg) and per hectare (21.00 t) gained from CB Jam-001 and minimum per plot (16 Kg) and per hectare (14 t) obtained from CB Jam-003 and CB Jam-005, respectively. The highest pod borer infestation (7 %) was observed from BARI Sheem-6 and lowest (3 %) from CB Jam-001, CB Jam-003 and CB Jam-004. In case of insects and diseases reaction aphids, jassids, white fly, mosaic virus and cercospora leaf spot we observed and Admire @ 0.25 ml & Tilt@ 0.5 ml per litre water were applied for controlling insects and diseases. Considering yield and yield contributing characters the line CB Jam-002 and CB Jam-004 were found promising. CB Jam-001 and CB Jam-003 may be selected for its lateness and CB Jam-004 and CB Jam-005 may be selected for their earliness. This experiment may be continued for further evaluation for confirmation of the results
