Performence of Summer Tomato Varieties at Jamalpur Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three tomato lines viz., BARI Hybrid Tomato 4, BARI Hybrid Tomato 8 and BARI Hybrid Tomato 10 were evaluated for performance of summer tomato varieties without hormone application in summer rainy season at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during kharif season 0f 2018. The result of the experiment revealed that significant variations were found for most of the characters of the study. The tallest plant was recorded from BARI Hybrid 10 (224.07 cm) and the shortest (143.10 cm) plant was recorded from BARI Hybrid 4. 50% flowering (59 days) was found in BARI Hybrid Tomato 10. The longest fruit was produced by BARI Hybrid 10 (4.74 cm) and shortest (4.22 cm) was found in BARI Hybrid 4. The highest number of fruits per plant (43.80) was obtained from BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 and the lowest (21.00) was recorded in BARI Hybrid 10. The highest average fruit weight (70.46 g) was recorded in BARI Hybrid 10 .However, the highest yield (16.20 t/ha) was recorded from BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 while the lowest (8.33 t/ha) was obtained from BARI Hybrid Tomato 10.

Objectives:

The experiment was undertaken to observe the yield potential and overall performance of the develop hybrids in summer-rainy season without hormone application under Jamalpur condition.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during the summer-rainy season 0f 2018. The hybrid line was BARI Hybrid Tomato-4, BARI Hybrid Tomato-8 and BARI Hybrid Tomato-10 was used. The seeds were sown on 15 May, 2018 and transplanted in the main field on 10 June 2018 under polytunnel. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3.2 m ´ 1.0 m and spacing was maintaining 60 cm ´ 40 cm. The fertilizers of cow dung, urea, TSP, MOP, gypsum and boron were applied @ 10000, 550, 450, 250, 120 and 2 kg/ha, respectively. The total amount of cow dung, half amount of TSP and entire amount of gypsum and boron were applied during final land preparation. The remaining half of TSP was applied during pit preparation before one week of transplanting. The entire urea and MOP were applied in three equal installments at 20, 35 and 50 DAP. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Bamboo sticks were used as support for each plant. Harvesting of fruit was done when the fruit became reddish in color. Data on plant height, days to 50% flowering, days to 1^st harvest, length and diameter of fruits, number of fruits per plant and yield were recorded. The collected data were statistically analyzed using Statistical Software STAR which was developed by IRRI.

The highest yield (54.77 t/ha) was recorded from BARI Hybrid Tomato 4, while the lowest (21.84 t/ha) was obtained from BARI Hybrid 10.

BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 is more superior than BARI Hybrid Tomato 8 and BARI Hybrid Tomato 10. For more confirmation, the trial should be continued for the next year.
