A study was conducted during  2018 to 2019 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur to effect of side shoot removal and vine pruning on growth and yield of sweet gourd (Cucurbita moschata Duch.ex Poir). Seven different treatments viz T1=Side shoot pruining up to 6th, T2=Side shoot pruning up to9th,T3=Side shoot pruining up to 12th,T4=Maintaining three secondary vines after pruning, T5=Maintaining four secondary vines after pruning, T6=Maintaining five secondary vines and T7=Control after pruning. In addition, character association with fruit and seed yield also done. Results of pruning revealed that T5(4-vine) produced the highest fruit yield (fruit yield,12.09t/ha).However fruit size individual fruit weight and seed quality were better in  T5=Maintaining four secondary vines after pruning other treatments .On the other hand analysis revealed that pruning had important effects on the yield and quality of fruit and seeds in sweet gourd.

Present study was conducted to develop the side shoot removal and vine pruning stages in maximizing growth and yield of sweet gourd.

The experiment was carried out at the research field at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during October 2018. The experiment consisted one factors, i.e, Seven different treatments viz T1=Side shoot pruining up to 6th, T2=Side shoot pruning up to9th,T3=Side shoot pruining up to 12th,T4=Maintaining three secondary vines after pruning, T5=Maintaining four secondary vines after pruning, T6=Maintaining five secondary vines and T7=Control after pruning. The seeds of sweet gourd varieties were sown in poly bags on 21th Oct 2018 and the seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 12th Nov 2018. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with two replications. The unit plot size was 8.0m x 2.5 m maintaining 2.0m x 2.5 m spacing. The land was fertilized with cow dung, N, P, K, S and Zn @ 20000, 175, 175, 150, 100 and 12 kg/ha, respectively. The total amount of cow dung, P, S and Zn and 1/3rd of each of N and K were applied during final land preparation and in the pit. The rest of N and K were applied in four equal installments at 21, 35, 55 and 75 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Pruning started after first female flower opening in the experiment. Data were recorded from two randomly selected plants per treatment per replication on number of vines/plant, weight of vine/plant (kg), vine length (cm), vine diameter (cm), leaf area (cm2), internodes length (cm) and vine yield (t/ha). The collected data on different characters were statistically analyzed using Statistical Software STAR which was developed by IRRI.

Performance of seven different treatments in respect of pruning was investigated and the findings of the present study have been discussed. Number of node for first male flowers was highest T1 (8.00) and lowest T7 (6.63). No. of node for 1st female flower was highest (26.50) and lowest T4 (20.00). No. of male flowers /vine was found T1 (11.50) and lowest T3 (8.50) and No. of female flowers /vine T5 (13.00) and lowest T3 (7.0). Vine Length was found highest T1 (113.50) and lowest T2 (57.55). No. of leaves /vine was found highest T1 (26.50) and lowest T7 (12.50). No. of leaves /plant was highest T5 (22.50) and lowest T2 (120.00). No. fruits set/vine was found highest in T5(5.00 )and fruit weight highest T5 (44480).50kg and lowest T3(2675.50)kg. Yield (t/ha) was found highest in T5 (12.09) t/ha and lowest T7 (8.13) t/ha. Disease was highest in T7 (4.20) and insect infestation was found highest in T7  (4.55). The present results of the experiment revealed that pruning has an important effect on yield and quality of fruit and seed in sweet gourd. Considering all the performance of different pruning operations T1 (Side shoot  up to 6th) was found most suitable operation for commercial fruit and seed production . On the other hand T5(4-vine) was suitable for only large size fruit and best quality seed production.
