Regional Yield Trial of Promising Ginger Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, BARI, Shibgonj, Bogura and Spices Research Sub Center Lalmonirhat during April 2019 to March 2020 Four promising ginger lines (G005, G0028, G001and G0027) were included in the study with BARI Ginger-1 as check. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Significant differences among the ginger lines were observed in both the location regarding different parameters. Significantly the highest rhizome yield was found from G005 in Bogura (31.40 t/ha) and Lalmonirhat (30.24 t/ha) while the lowest rhizome yield was found from BARI Ginger-1 in both location (19.79 t/ha and 18.90 t/ha respectively). Significantly higher plant height, number of tillers/plant, number of leaves/plant, weight of primary and secondary rhizome, dry matter (%) and yield along with better yield contributing characters were observed from the line G005. The highest dry matter (%) of 27.80 and 27.20 was found from G005 in Bogura and lalmonirhat location, respectively. The lowest dry matter 18.81 % and 19.00 % was obtained from BARI Ada-1 at Bogura and Lalmonirhat location, respectively

Objectives:

In the varietal development process collection and evaluation of germplasm is a continuous process and accordingly different ginger germplasm were collected from local and exotic areas which need evaluation of their performance. Considering higher yield with better qualities and tolerant to diseases some promising lines need to be studied over location for regional adaptability

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted in two locations, Spices Research Center Bogura (L₂) and Spices Research Sub Center Lalmonirhat (L₁) during April, 2019 to March 2020 to select the promising ginger germplasm for releasing a variety. Four promising ginger lines (G005, G0028, G0027 and G001) were evaluated in this study with BARI Ginger-1 as check. Rhizomes were planted on 12 April 2019, maintaining 60 cm x 30 cm spacing. The unit plot size was 3.0 m x 1.6 m. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications in each location. The size of the seed rhizome was 45-50g. In addition to 5 t/ha of cow dung, the crop was fertilized with N₁₄₀ P₅₄ K₁₁₇S₂₀Zn₃B₁ kg/ha. The entire quantity of cow dung, P, S, Zn, B and ½ of K was applied during land preparation. One half of N was applied at 50 DAP. The rest K and N was applied with two equal splits at 80 and 110 DAP. To control soft rot disease of ginger, seed treatment was done with Ridomil Gold (2g/l of water). To control the same disease foliar application of Ridomil Gold was done three times at 10 days interval starting from 75 DAP. To control rhizome fly Ripcord @ 1ml/L of water was applied at the base of the plant. Three weeding were done at 50, 85 and 110 DAP. The crop was harvested on 5 March 2020. Data on different morphological and yield contributing characters were collected and analyzed using MSTATC program and mean values were separated by DMRT

Achievement/Findings:

From the above trial, it may be concluded that the line GOO5 performed better in both the locations. For more confirmation the experiment should be repeated for the next year in more locations.
