Development and Release of BRRI Dhan79 for T. Aman Season in Submergence Cum Stagnant Flood Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in T. Aman season. The aim of this study was to develop and release submergence cum stagnant flood tolerant high yield potential rice variety for T. Aman season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR9159-8-5-40-14-57 as BRRI dhan79 for T. Aman season in 2017 for the complementary variety of BRRI dhan52 and supplementary variety to BRRI dhan49. Plant height of the variety is 112 cm with 135-140 days (under rainfed condition) and 160-165 days (under three weeks of complete submerged condition). Under rainfed condition average yield is about 5.5 t/ha but under three weeks of complete submerged condition it can varies from 4.0-4.5 t/ha and grain size is intermediate medium. BRRI dhan79 can tolerate three weeks submergence under the controlled submerged condition with clear to semi-turbid water and also 15-20 days medium deep (50-60 cm) water stagnation tolerance after de-submerged condition. This variety showed around 0.5 t/ha higher than BRRI dhan49 under rainfed condition and 1.0 t/ha higher than BRRI dhan52 under flash flood and controlled submerged condition.

Objectives:

To develop modern rice variety for submergence cum stagnant flood tolerant with emphasis on good grain quality and yield potential superior to standard varieties for T. Aman season.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in T. Aman season. This variety was developed through molecular marker assisted backcrossing technique. It is BR line with pedigree BR9159-8-5-40-14-57 (BRRI dhan49*6/BRRI dhan52). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Yield Trial (OYT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (RYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted to evaluate of promising breeding lines for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety (s). Finally the Proposed Variety Trial (PVT) was done for on-farm evaluation of proposed line by the NSB team for the recommendation of release as a new variety. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan49 and BRRI dhan52. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BR9159-8-5-40-14-57 as variety.
