Genetic Diversity of Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

D² analysis of 15 onion lines and analysis of variance were done. The lines were fell into four clusters. The inter cluster distances were larger than the intra cluster distances. Maximum inter cluster distance was found between cluster I and II followed by cluster I and IV and I and III. The lines of these clusters could be used in future breeding program. The cluster I comprises only one line which could be released for farmer's use.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken in order to find out or select suitable lines on the basis of genetic diversity.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at spices research sub centre of BARI, Joydebpur during winter. Fifteen tropical onion lines were evaluated by seed sowing on January 7, transplanting on February 20 and harvesting on May 22, 1998 at a spacing of 10x10cm. The size of unit plot was 3x 1 m. The experimental was fertilized with 5 ton cowdung, 260 kg TSP and 160 kg MP/ha respectively. Intercultural operation were done as and when necessary. Data on various yield and yield contributing characters were recorded. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and Mahalanobis's (1936) generalized distance (D²) extended by Rao (1952) MSTATC and Genstat Programs of computer laboratory of ORC, BARI. The genotypes were grouped into 4 different clusters following the method discussed by Tocher (Rao 1952).

Achievement/Findings:

The result of CVA revealed that the important characters responsible for genetic divergence in vector I were number of leaves, bulb breadth, pod yield/plot (g) and yield (t/ha) and in vector II plant height (cm), neck thickness average bulb wt. at harvest . The other characters of both the axes played a minor role in the genetic divergence.
