Studies on Morphological Characteristics of Fruits of Some Guava Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fruits of thirteen-guava germplasm were produced at the germplasm center of fruit tree improvement project of Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University to study the physical parameters. Fruit shape varied from ovate to pitcher in different germplasm. Globes fruit shape and smooth fruit surface were found in PG-028 and PG-029. Flesh colour was found white and whitish in PG-028 and PG-029 respectively. Pulp texture was crispy and taste was moderately sweet in PG-028 and PG-029. Seed size was medium in PG-028 and small in PG-029.

Objectives:

To characterize the thirteen air-layered guava cultivars on physical character basis.

Methodology:

The experiment wa conducted at the germplasm center, Fruit-tree improvement project (FTIP) of the Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during May to September 2000. Thirteen guava cultivars viz.,PG-OOI, PG-002, PG-003, PG004, PG-005, PG-006, PG-007, PG-008, PG-009, PG-Oll, PG-013, PG028 and PG-029 were included in this study. The experimental design was Randomized Complete Block Design with there replications. There were three guava trees for each cultivar and mature fruits were randomly collected from plants. The fruits were brought at the laboratory of the department of Horticulture for investigation their physical parameters such as shape of fruit, skin colour which were determined by using a standard chart and eye estimation. Surface smoothness, flesh colour, seed size, texture of pulp, taste and hardiness of seeds were also recorded by a panel Judge through organoleptic taste.

Achievement/Findings:

PG-028 and PG-029 were the better germplasm in respect of their fruit shape, flesh colour, fruit surface, pulp texture, taste and seed size.
