Effect of Potassium on the Growth and Yield of Ginger

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Center, BAR!, Bogra (under AEZ-3), Bangladesh during 2009- 10 to find out the optimum K level for better yield with higher profit of ginger. The treatments used were four level of K viz, K_o (control), K₁ (80 kg), K₂ (120 kg) and K₃ (160 kg) per hectare. The treatment were arranged in a Randomize Complete Block Design (RCBD) using five replications. Ginger variety, BAR! Ada-I was used in this study. The maximum yield (20.47 t/ha) was obtained from K₂ (120 kg K ha^-1) and the lowest (12.88 t/ha) was recorded from K_o (control) treatment. In respect of dry matter, the highest (25.07%) dry matter of rhizome was found from K₂ (120 kg K ha^-1) treatment and the minimum (21.71%) was from K_o (control) treatment. The highest (2.29) BCR was found from K₂ (120 kg K ha^-1) treatment and the lowest (1.49) was found from K₀ (control) treatment. K₂ @ 120 kg K ha^-1 is to be best for ginger production with economics in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum Potassium (K) level for better yield with higher profit of ginger.

Methodology:

The experiment was undertaken at the Spices Research Centre, BARI, Bogra (under AEZ-3), during the period from April 2009 to March 2010. It has sub-tropical climate with an average annual rainfall of 237.13 mm. The soil was sandy loamy, having a pH of 5.8-6.6. The initial available K status in the soil was 0.18 meq/100 g soil. The field experiment was laid out in RCBD with five replications. Healthy ginger rhizome BARI Ada -1 variety was used for planting material. Four levels of potassium viz, K₀(control), K₁ (80 kg K ha^-1), K₂ (120 kg K ha^-1) and K₃ (160 kg K ha^-l) were used in this study. The unit plot size was 4.0 x 1.5 m. Distance between block to block was 1.0 m and plot to plot 0.5m was maintained. Planting was done on the 1^st April, 2009 having spacing 40 cm x 25 cm. A blanket dose of cowdung , TSP, MOP & gypsum @5 ton, , 267, 240 and 111 kg ha^-1 respectively was also used to all the experiment area and other cultural operations was given according to the requirements of the crop. Total cowdung was applied at the time of final land preparation and the entire quantity of TSP, gypsum and half of MOP was applied during final land preparation. The half of the urea was applied at 50 days after planting and the remaining MOP and urea were applied in two equal splits at 80 and 110 days after planting. Earthing up was done at 60, 90 and 110 days after planting. The crop was grown under rainfed condition, because farmers are generally ginger produced without irrigation. The data on different growth parameters was recorded from 10 selected plants randomly from each plot at 15 days interval at 50, 65, 80, 110, 125, 140 and 155 days after planting. Yield and yield contributing characters was collected at harvesting time. The collected data was analyzed statistically and adjusted with least significance (LSD) at 5% and 1% level of probability.
