Profitability of Ginger Production as Influenced by Planting Time and Rhizome Size

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Spices Research Centre, Bogra, during March, 2000 to January, 2001. Three planting time viz., March 25, April 10 and April 30 and three rhizome size viz., small (25-30g), medium (35-40g) and large (45-50g) were studied. The study focuses the economic return of ginger production from the different planting time and rhizome size. The highest gross return Tk. 135500/ha and net return Tk. 937027/ha were obtained from the date of planting April 10 with large seed rhizome. The maximum (3.35) benefit cost ratio (BCR) also obtained from the same treatment combination. While the lowest (2.25) benefit cost ratio was obtained from the date of planting March 25, with large seed rhizome.

Objectives:

The present study was under taken to estimate the costs and returns from ginger cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Spices Research Centre, Bogra during the period from March, 2000 to January, 2001 under rainfed condition. The soil of the experimental site was Tista polal Tract. The texture of the soil was sandy loam with a pH value of 5.8-6.6. Three levels of planting time (March 25, April 10 and April 30) and three levels of rhizome size (small 25-30g, Medium 35-40g and Large 45-50g) were used for the trial with a locally available (Nilphamari) cultivar. The experiment was laid out in RCBD factorial design with three replications. The unit plot was 1.8m X 1.8m which accommodated 27 plants at a spacing of 60cm between rows and 20 cm between hills. The seed rhizomes of ginger were planted as per treatments. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ cowdung 5 tons per hectare, Urea @ 304 kg per hectare, TSP @ 267 kg per hectare, MP @ 233 kg per hectare and Gypsum @ 111 kg per hectare (Anon; 1999). The whole amount of cowdung and the entire quantity of TSP, Gypsum and half of MP are to be applied during land preparation. The half of the urea and remaining Urea and MP are to be applied in two equal splits at 50, 80 and 110 days after planting, respectively. Weeding was done as and when necessary. Earthing up was done at 60, 90 and 110 days after planting. Plant protection measures were taken as and when necessary. The yield data were collected at harvest and statistical analysis was done using analysis of variance technique and differences among treatment means were compared by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test taking 5% and 1% probability (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). Information related input use as well as return was collected on plot basis, then converted into per hectare and were not analyzed. Interest on input cost was calculated on the basis of commercial bank's interest rate. The rental value of land was calculated on the basis of existing annual rate practiced in locality. In this study, however, opportunity cost of land was calculated only for the period from planting to harvesting on the basis of prevailing bank,’s interest rate.
