Economic Performance of Ginger Cultivation as Influenced by Rhizome Size and Spacing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Spices Research Center, BARI, Bogra to find out the influence of seed rhizome size and spacing on the growth, yield and economic return of ginger. It consisted of four different seed rhizomes which was small (S₁:30g), medium (S₂:35g), large (S₃: 40g) and very large (S4: 45g) and four plant spacing (D₁: 20x25 cm), (D₂: 30x25 cm), (D₃: 40x25 cm) and (D₄: 50x25 cm). The treatment was arranged in Randomize Complete Block Design using with three replications. The highest gross return TK.1347750 per hectare was obtained from S₄D₁ treatment combination (very large rhizome 45g with closer spacing 20x25 cm). The maximum (1.62) benefit cost ratio (BCR) was obtained from the S₃D₃ treatment combination (40g seed rhizome with 40x25 cm spacing) while the lowest (1.25) was S₁D₄ treatment combination (small seed rhizome 30g with closer spacing 50x25 cm).

Objectives:

The present study was under taken to estimate the cost and best return from ginger cultivation as influenced by rhizome size and spacing

Methodology:

The experiment was undertaken in the farm of the Spices Research Centre, BARI, Bogra, during the period from April 2009 to January 2010. It has sub-tropical climate with an average annual rainfall of 237.13 mm. The soil is Tista polal tract, having a pH of 5.8-6.6. The field experiment was laid out in a Randomize Complete Block Design using four different sizes of rhizome and four spacing with three replications. Each plot measuring 4.0m long and 1.5m broad was prepared for each treatment. Healthy ginger rhizome BARI Ada -1 variety was used for planting material. Four rhizome sizes viz. small S₁(30g), medium S₂ (35g), large S₃ (40g) and very large S₄ (45g) constituted as the first and four plant spacing D₁ (20 25 cm), D₂ (30 x 25 cm), D₃ (40 x 25 cm) and D₄ (50 x 25 cm) as the second factor. The seed rhizome of ginger was planted at I^st April, 2009. A uniform application of Cow dung , Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum at 5 ton, 304, 267, 233 and 111kg ha^-1 respectively was also made to all the experiment area and other cultural operations was given according to the requirements of the crop. Earthing up was done at 60, 90 and 110 days after planting. The crop was grown under rainfed condition, because farmers are generally ginger produced without irrigation. The data on different growth parameters was recorded from 15 days interval at 10 selected plants randomly. The yield data was collected at harvesting time and statistical analysis was done using analysis of variance technique and differences among treatment means was compared by least significant difference (LSD) test taking at 5% and 1% level of probability. Information related input use as well as return was collected on plot basis, than converted into per hectare. Interest on input cost was calculated on the basis of commercial bank's interest rate. The rental value of land was calculated on the basis of existing annual rate practiced in locality. In this study, however, opportunity cost of land was calculated only for the period from planting to harvesting on the basis of prevailing bank’s interest rate.

Achievement/Findings:

The large seed rhizome (40g) with 40 x 25 cm spacing (S₃D₃) treatment combination economically profitable to the grower. Moreover, an increase in seed rhizome size of ginger significantly improved rhizome yield.
