Economic Performance of Ginger Cultivation as Influenced by Irrigation and Mulching

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Spices Research Center, BARI, Bogra in order to determine the irrigation effect and suitable mulch material as well as best economic return. It consisted of two irrigation 1 (irrigation in dry period), 12 (control) and three mulch M. (control), M 1 (water hyacinth) and M 2 (rice straw mulch). The treatment was arranged in Randomize Complete Block Design using with three replications. The highest gross return TK 1373500 per hectare was obtained from IM, (irrigation in dry period with rice straw mulch) treatment combination. The maximum (1.55) benefit cost ratio (BCR) was obtained from the IM2 (irrigation in dry period with rice straw mulch) treatment combination while the lowest (0.90) was 12Mo (control) treatment combination.

Objectives:

To estimate the cost and best economic return from ginger cultivation as influenced by irrigation and mulching.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the farm of the Spices Research Centre, BARI, Bogra, during the period from April 2009 to January 2010. It has sub-tropical climate with an average annual rainfall of 237.13 mm. The soil is Tista polal tract, having a pH of 5.8-6.6. The field experiment was laid out in a Randomize Complete Block Design using two irrigation and three mulch material with three replications. Each plot measuring 4.0m long and 1.5m broad was prepared for each treatment. Healthy ginger rhizome BARI Ada -1 variety was used for planting material. Two irrigation viz., I₁ (irrigation in dry period) and I₀ (control) constituted as the first and three mulching M_o (control), M₁ (water hyacinth) and M₂ (rice straw mulch) as the second factor. The seed rhizome of ginger was planted at 1_st April, 2009 and each rhizome weight ± 40.0g. A uniform application of Cowdung , Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum at 5 ton, 304, 267, 233 and 111kg ha respectively was also made to all the experiment area and other cultural operations was given according to the requirements of the crop. The mulch materials were water hyacinth and rice straw, which were placed before the rhizomes started to emerge. The second mulch was added on 60 days after planting because the first was washed away by rains, wind and irrigation water. Rice straw and water hyacinth were applied at 2.0 and 2.5 kg/m², respectively Das (1999). Rice straw was @ TK. 0.575 /kg and water hyacinth was @ TK. 0.30 /kg. The crop was grown under rainfed condition, because farmers are generally ginger produced without irrigation. The data on different growth parameters was recorded from 15 days interval at 10 selected plants randomly. The yield data was collected at harvesting time and statistical analysis was done using analysis of variance technique and differences among treatment means was compared by least significant difference (LSD) test taking at 5% and 1% level of probability. Information related input use as well as return was collected on plot basis, than converted into per hectare. Interest on input cost was calculated on the basis of commercial bank's interest rate. The rental value of land was calculated on the basis of existing annual rate practiced in locality. In this study, however, opportunity cost of land was calculated only for the period from planting to harvesting on the basis of prevailing bank's interest rate.
