Effect of Detrashing, Removal of Primary Infested Cane and Cidan 4g on Management of Sugarcane Stem Borer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted following cultural practices such as detrashing at 15, 30, 45 and 60 days intervals, infested cane removal and application of chemical insecticide namely Cidan 4G @ 3.0 kg ha^-1 to control sugarcane stem borer under field conditions during 2013-2014 at Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research farm, Ishurdi, Pabna. All the cultural practices and insecticide treatment revealed significantly the lower level of infestation and higher level of yield compared to control (untreated). Among the treatments, Cidan 4G @ 3.0 kg ha^-1 showed significantly the lowest level of infestation and resulted the highest yield.

Objectives:

The present experiment was conducted to find out the effect of detrashing on borer infestation, yield and sugar recovery and to identify the appropriate and effective non-chemical and chemical insecticides as component of IPM package with optimum dose and frequency of application.

Methodology:

The study was carried out in the experimental farm of Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute, Ishurdi, Pabna during the cropping season 2013-2014. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The size of the plot was 5m × 5m with an inter plot distance of 1m and block to block distance of 2 m.Variety Isd 34 was selected and planted for this study. Planting was done through conventional sett placement (end to end) in the trenches in December, 2013. Fertilizers were applied according to the fertilizer recommendation guide and intercultural operations were done whenever necessary. The experiment was comprised of seven treatments including untreated control and the treatments were T1 : Detrashing at 15 days interval from June to September/ October, T2 : Detrashing at 30 days interval from June to September/October, T3 : Detrashing at 45 days interval from June to September/October, T4 : Detrashing at 60 days interval from June to September/October, T5 : Removal of primary infested cane, T6 : Cidan 4G @ 3.0 kg ai ha-1 applied in June, July and August (standard) and T7 : Untreated control. Stem borer incidence generally starts from May. T herefore detrashing was started from the month of June. Data were taken in July, August, September, October and finally in November. The yield of canes per plot by weight in ton ha^-1, % recovery loss and % weight loss were recorded at harvest. For determination of sugar recovery, the cane was crushing by power machine and then juice was analysis by analytical plant. Data analysis Data were analyzed by analysis of variance using MSTAT-C computer software. The means were separated using the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

Weight loss and recovery loss due to stem borer infestation were different at different detrashing days of interval of those varieties and decreased with the decreasing rate of insect infestation. Detrashing at 15 days interval may be a suitable method for management of stem borer on Isd 32 and this variety is safer commercial cultivation in Bangladesh especially in stem borer prone areas.
