Effect of Water Logging Stress on Yield and Yield Contributing Traits of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University during January 2018 to May 2018 to evaluate the effects of waterlogging on yield and yield contributing traits of soybean genotypes. Ten soybean genotypes, viz. G0006, BD-2336, AGS-383, PK-472, BD-2350, GMOT-22, NCS-1, Shohag, BU soybean 1 and BARI soybean 6 were tested under three waterlogging durations, namely control, 4 days of waterlogging and 8 days of waterlogging. The experiment was laid out in a splitplot design with three replications. The results indicated that waterlogging significantly reduced plant growth, such as plant height, number of branches plant^-1, and yield and yield contributing traits, such as number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds pod^-1, 100-seed weight, seed yield and harvest index. Those characters were affected more by 8 days of waterlogging than that of 4 days. Nonetheless, the genotypes Shohag, BU soybean 1 and BARI soybean 6 were less affected by waterlogging. The seed yield of BU soybean 1, Shohag and BARI soybean 6 was 2.11 g plant^-1, 1.93 g plant^-1 and 1.87g plant^-1 under eight days waterlogging condition, whereas the relatively more susceptible genotypes G0006, PK-472 and BD-2336 had 0.54 g plant^-1, 0.73 g plant-1 and 0.96 g plant^-1. Therefore, genotypes Shohag, BU soybean 1 and BARI soybean 6 may be suitable for growing under waterlogging up to 8 days.

Objectives:

This study was undertaken to find out the effects of waterlogging on yield and yield contributing traits of ten selected soybean genotypes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Department of Agronomy, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur 1706, Bangladesh during January-May 2018. Two different conditions were created in the field i.e. 4 days of waterlogging and 8 days of waterlogging along with control. Ten soybean genotypes viz. G0006 (G1), BD2336 (G2), AGS-383 (G3), PK-472 (G4), BD-2350 (G5), GMOT-22 (G6), NCS-1 (G7), Shohag (G8), BU soybean 1 (G9) and BARI soybean 6 (G10) were selected for the evaluation, those maintained in main plot and flooding durations at sub-plot in a split-plot design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3.6×2 m with a planting configuration of 30×5 cm. The adjacent blocks and adjacent plots were separated from one another by 1 m and 1.5 m, respectively. During final land preparation cow dung was incorporated into the soil at the rate of 5 t ha^-1. A fertilizer dose of 20.5 kg N, 25.5 kg P, 50.5 kg K, 13 kg S, 1.5 kg Zn and 0.8 kg B ha^-1 (BARC 2012) was applied as basal during final land preparation in the form of urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate monohydrate and boric acid, respectively. Seeds of similar size were sown after treating with vitavax 200 at the rate of 2.5 g kg^-1 of seeds. Sowing was done manually in lines on January 02, 2018. Immediately after sowing the plots were lightly irrigated to ensure uniform emergence. Waterlogging stress treatment was imposed at the pod development stage (65 days after emergence) maintaining a flooding depth of 3-5 cm and continued for 4 days and 8 days for 4 days and 8 days waterlogging plots, respectively. Plant protection measures were taken and intercultural operations were done whenever necessary. Data on different parameters like plant height, number of branches plant^-1, number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds pod^-1, 100-seed weight, seed yield and harvest index (HI) were recorded at harvest. Grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture content. The recorded data for different plant parameters were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) by using “CROP-STAT” software to examine the significant variation of the results due to different treatments. Microsoft Excel software program was used wherever appropriate to perform statistical analysis. The treatment means were compared using the least significant difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance (Gomez and Gomez 1984).

It may be concluded that BU soybean 1, Shohag and BARI soybean 6 can preferably be selected as suitable for growing under both 4 days and 8 days waterlogging conditions to get relatively higher yield.
