Screening of Different Brinjal Lines/varieties Against Bacterial Wilt Under Natural Field Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in the field of RARS, Jamalpur during 2018-2019 to screen out the resistant cultivars of brinjal against wilt disease. Twenty one germplasm and cultivars were used as treatments. Four germplasm were found highly susceptible and four germplasm showed susceptibility to bacterial wilt. Five germplasm were moderately susceptible to bacterial wilt. Among the tested germplasm seven germplasm and one variety namely BARI Begun-8 were found moderately resistant to bacterial wilt.

Objectives:

The objectives of the search to identify resistant sources and incorporating those genes in commercial cultivars

Methodology:

This present paper reports on the susceptibility of twenty one brinjal germplsm and cultivars to bacterial wilt caused by R. solanacearum. Brinjal accessions were screened in the research field of RARS, Jamalpur during 2018-2019. One-month-old seedlings, raised separately in seed bed containing sterile soiland were transplanted in main field on November 11, 2018. The size of the experimental plot was 10m × 0.7m for each replication. Plant to plant and row-to-row distances were 70 cm and 70 cm respectively. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. Recommended doses of fertilizer and cowdung were applied and other agronomic practices were done properly. The incidence of wilt was monitored daily up to 45 days from transplantation. Wilt symptoms and the number of wilted plants for each accession was recorded and graded on a 0-5 scale of Hussain et al. (2005) and Gopalakrishnan et al. (2014) with some modifications. The modified rating scale is given below:

0= Highly resistant (HR) : Plants did not show any wilt symptom

1= Resistant (R) : 1-10% plants wilted

2= Moderately resistant (MR) : 11-20% plants wilted

3= Moderately susceptible (MS) : 21-30% plants wilted

4= Susceptible (S) : 31-40% plants wilted

5= Highly susceptible (HS) : More than 40% plants wilted

The disease incidence was calculated by the following formula: % Disease incidence= (Number of infected pants/ Number of total inspected plants) × 100

The accessions were categorized as resistant to highly susceptible depending on the percentage of wilt of the plants. Obtained data were analyzed statistically using IRRI-STAR Nebula.

The reactions of different germplasm of brinjal in terms of bacterial wilt incidence significantly differed under the present experiment (Table 1). Most of the brinjal germplasm showed susceptibility to R. solanacearum because the weather conditions during the crop season were conducive for the disease development. Among the germplasm 4 germplasm were found highly susceptible to bacterial wilt having incidence more than 40%. Four germplasm showed incidence percentage ranging from 33.33 to 36.67 were susceptible for R. solanacearum. Five germplasm were moderately susceptible to bacterial wilt. Among the tested germplasm seven germplasm and one variety namely BARI Begun-8 were found moderately resistant to bacterial wilt having incidence less than 20%. In the present study under field condition the air temperature and relative humidity were 11-35°C and 70-92% respectively. These factors together with the influence of soil moisture and temperature may influence the resistance of the accessions. Results of the present study were in agreement with those obtained by Hanson et al. (1996) and Wang et al. (1997) where the field reaction of tomato lines to different strains of R. solanacearum differed at different locations in South East Asia and to eggplants respectively.

From the present study, it can be concluded that the moderately resistant germplasm can directly be utilized as parents for transferring stable late blight resistance gene in varietal improvement programme. For more confirmation of the study the experiment can be repeated for next year.
