Garlic Germplasm Evaluation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, BARI, Shibganj, Bogura during Rabi Season 2019-2020 to select the promising garlic germplasm for releasing a variety. Sixteen different garlic lines (GC0043, GC0047, GC0046, GC0045, GC001, GC005, GC0012, GC0018, GC0029, GC0030, GC0017, GC0042, GC0036, GC0048,GC0049, GC0040) and BARI Rashun-3 check as)were collected and evaluated based on their yield and other desirable characters. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Among the lines, the highest yield (12.24 t/ha) was obtained from GC0049 and the lowest (6.74 t/ha) was found from GC0040. Disease severity was also lower in GC0049. Significantly all the yield contributing characters found better from GC0049.

Objectives:

The average yield of garlic in our country is very low. For this reason, some germplasm of garlic were collected from different parts of the country to select the lines having higher yield potential.

Methodology:

The evaluation study was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Bogura during Rabi 2019-2020 to select the promising garlic germplasm for releasing a variety. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Sixteen different garlic lines (GC0043, GC0047, GC0046, GC0045, GC001, GC005, GC0012, GC0018, GC0029, GC0030, GC0017, GC0042, GC0036, GC0040, GC0048 and, GC0049) were collected and evaluated along with BARI Rashun -3 as check. The unit plot size was 3 m x 1.2 m. The spacing was 15 cm x 10 cm. In addition to 5 t/ha of cow dung, the crop was fertilized with N₁₀₀ P₅₄ K₁₆₆S₂₀kg/ha. The entire quantity of cow dung, P, K, S and ½ of N was applied during final land preparation. The rest of N was applied in two equal splits at 25 and 50 DAP. The cloves were planted on 1^st November 2019. Weeding was done at 25, 50 and 75 days after planting. To control tip burn disease, the crop was sprayed with Rovral 50WP@ 2 g/L of water three times at 35, 45 and 55 DAS. Three irrigation were done at 15 days interval during vegetative growth stage. Irrigation was stopped before 30 days of crop maturity. The crop was harvested on 16 March 2020. Data on different morphological and yield contributing characters were collected and analyzed using MSTAT program and mean values were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above trial, it may be concluded that the line GC0049, GC0047, GC0046, GC0045, GC005, and GCOO18 may be selected for AYT in the next year.
